  • Christmas: a time for reflection

AS Cuestars slips into a green-baize dressing gown and hibernates for four weeks over Christmas and New Year, it’s a good time to sit back and reflect on the important things in life.

The things we cherish the most; the things we hold dear in our hearts; the things that help us through the dark days; the things that stand out as beacons of light in our drab day-to-day existence.

Yes - that’s right - winning snooker matches.

Carol singers in the streets around the Liberal Club in High Wycombe have been heard singing Ding Dong Wilson’s on a High after three of the eight events on the Cuestars South of England Championship Tour.

Matt Wilson has claimed two victories and takes a 32-point lead over Richard Somauroo into the fourth leg at Jesters, Swindon, on January 10.

The Championship Tour has proved a remarkable success. Top players from far afield have been attracted by the high-quality scratch tournaments.

Already, the south’s finest have chalked up 80 half-century breaks including an impressive ten tons – the highest being the 117 scored by Christian Chislett (Selsey) at Salisbury.

It certainly won’t be a Bleak Mid-Winter for 13-year-old England international Jordan Winbourne. The Chandler’s Ford SC youngster leads the Cuestars Under-21 Gold Tour after three of the eight events.

Under-21 Silver Tour leader Lee Bell (The Academy, Eastleigh) is hoping to Jingle all the Way to the title in the New Year.

And Ryan Gavin (Liberal Club, High Wycombe), is Joyful and Triumphant at being top of the Under-21 Bronze Tour.

Don’t forget, the venue for the next Under-21 tournaments on January 10 has been switched from Cardiff to Salisbury.

Jesters A are hoping that 2009/10 Tis the Season to be Jolly. The Swindon foursome hold a single-point advantage over fierce rivals and defending champions Westbury A in the Cuestars Junior Section Team Challenge. They resume battle in event three at Player’s, in Westbury, on January 24.

And Jesters are Laughing all the Way in the Club Rankings. They lead The Academy, in Eastleigh, by 144 points.

Finally, Alan Grainger (Liberal Club, High Wycombe) is Leading Onward, Beaming Bright in the Cuestars Masters rankings.

Great post, Tim. Christmas: a time for reflection. For jolly, optimistic reflection.

The article may come as a bit of a surprise to those who only know your comprehensive info-articles about snooker competitions. But I remember some really good stuff on your blog (ex There's a dog in the bar...and other stories ). Snooker related but also fun. Also well written.
