Ollie shoulders on
LESS than a week after dislocating his right shoulder, Ollie Tydeman collected his first winners’ trophy on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold Tour.
Tydeman had compiled a 109 break in a Super League match, in Southampton, hours after suffering the injury.
And just six days later he defeated rankings leader Jordan Winbourne 2-1 in the Cuestars final at The Academy, Eastleigh.
The 20-year-old from Woolston Conservative Club said: “I’m cueing really well. I’ve found a lot of confidence from somewhere and the balls are going in.
“I’ve changed a few things with my cue-action, but the thing I make sure of is that absolutely nothing moves at all. It’s paying dividends.”
He added to group-stage breaks of 72, 67 and 50 with a 64 in a 2-0 semi-final win over Group B runner-up Lee Roling (Eastleigh).
In his only previous outing on the Gold Tour, Tydeman lost 3-1 to Winbourne in the last-four in Swindon in December.
Title-favourite Winbourne chalked up runs of 72, 54, 50, 48, 42 and 41.
The 13-year-old England international overcame Daniel Woods (Chandler’s Ford) 2-1 from 1-0 down in the semi-finals.
Hours after dislocating his shoulder the previous week, and dosed up with ultra-strong painkillers, Tydeman chalked up a 109 against John Barton in a Super League match at Eastleigh Railway Institute.
His right shoulder popped out during an accident at his home in the afternoon.
While his family was calling an ambulance, Tydeman put it back in himself.
“This was the third time it’s happened,” he said. “Once you’ve done it once, it weakens the tendons and makes it easier to come out again.”
Tydeman had previously dislocated his shoulder while sleeping and again while kayaking at Fairthorne Manor, Botley.
“It’s quite painful,” he added. “But you know it’s going to really hurt if you try and move it. It’s not nice. My mum found the strongest pain killers I’ve ever had. It was still really painful.
“It wasn’t my cue arm luckily!”
The sixth tournament in the series is at Jesters SC, Swindon, on Sunday, April 11.

About Cuestars
Founded 16 years ago by director John Hunter, Cuestars runs grass-root snooker tournaments across the South of England and South Wales.
Competitions take place on Sundays between October and June, and cater for players aged eight to 80 - and in some cases even older!
All Cuestars tournaments, apart from the Team Challenge, are played off scratch. There are no handicaps. Cuestars uses a round-robin format leading to a knockout.
The Cuestars ‘South of England’ Championship Tour, which has no age limit, consists of eight tournaments. The top-16 ranked players will be invited to the end-of-season play-off for the title of Cuestars ‘South of England’ Champion. And the top eight aged 50 and over will play off to find the Cuestars ‘South of England’ Masters Champion.
There are three under-21 tours. Gold is for players with a high break of 60 or more, Silver is for players with a high break between 40-59 and Bronze is for players with a high break of less than 40. After eight tournaments, the top-eight ranked players from each tour will be invited to the end-of-season play-offs to find the Gold, Silver and Bronze ‘South of England’ Junior Champions.
