  • Third time lucky?

ONE man will be heading to Poole on Sunday praying to the snooker gods for a “kinder draw”.

Neil Carroll has found himself in the group of death with the two eventual finalists in the previous two legs on the Cuestars South of England Seniors (40+) Tour.

Some may consider that slightly unfortunate.

There were 19 entries split into three groups of five and one of four for the second event in Salisbury at the end of January.

Neil, who is based at Salisbury Snooker Club but lives in Rownhams, near Southampton, was in the group of four – with Colin Norton and John Hunter who went on to reach the final.

Never mind. There was always the third leg in Swindon in March.

At Jesters, there was a 17-strong field split into three groups of four and one of five. Neil was again drawn in a group of four.

However, John Hunter did not compete and Colin Norton was in a different group. Phew!

Except that Steve Ashton won Neil’s group and Martin Wallace was runner-up and THEY met in the final.

“I enjoy the challenge,” insists Neil, who is seventh in the rankings. “Although a kinder draw would be nice next time.”

The fourth and final leg is at the Ambassador Snooker Club, Poole, this Sunday coming, May 22.

If, at about 10.30am, you hear a 46-year-old man weeping like a child, please put a comforting arm around Neil’s shoulders and buy him a large brandy.

The top-16 ranked players will be invited to the Seniors Championship on Cuestars Finals Day at Jesters Snooker Hall, Swindon, on Sunday, June 5. Professional Ryan Day will be guest of honour.

The top four, who may be familiar to Neil, are: Colin Norton (Castle SC, Fareham), Martin Wallace (Colours, Reading), John Hunter (Salisbury SC) and Steve Ashton (Salisbury SC).
