WEST Sussex architect Jon Charlton built a formidable lead on last season’s Cuestars South of England Championship Tour.
And in a rare double, the rankings winner was crowned Cuestars Champion on Finals Day in Swindon.
The big question is whether Charlton can repeat the feat in the 2012/13 campaign, which kicks off in October.
Two players came close to emulating Charlton’s double.
Under-21 Gold rankings winner Ben Tanner (Eastleigh) was beaten 3-2 by Callum Lloyd (Newport, South Wales) in the championship final
And on the Seniors Tour, John Hunter (Salisbury SC) pipped play-off champion Nick Birney (Liberal Club, High Wycombe) by just five points in the rankings race.
Troy Bodman (Jesters, Swindon) won four of the eight Silver events to clinch the rankings title by a massive 22 points. But he was beaten 2-1 in the championship quarter-finals by the eventual winner, Sonnie O’Sullivan, who finished joint eighth in the rankings and completed a Finals Day double for the Liberal Club, High Wycombe.
And the Bronze titles went the same way. Rankings champion Stewart Ball (Greenbaize, Bournemouth) lost 2-1 in the quarter-finals to Austen Petty (Chandler’s Ford SC), who was also ranked eighth and went on to triumph in the final.
Cuestars this week released its new calendar, which offers competitions in five different categories.
The eight-leg Under-21 Gold, Silver and Bronze Tours kick off at Salisbury on October 7. A week later, Swindon hosts the first of the six Championship Tour open events. And on October 28, Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club is the first venue on the six-tournament Seniors Tour for those aged 40 or over.
Eight clubs will host Cuestars events this season: Salisbury SC; Jesters, Swindon; Chandler’s Ford SC; Woking SC; The Crucible Sports & Social Club, Newbury; Greenbaize SC, Bournemouth; Fareham SC and the South West Snooker Academy, Gloucester, with its pro-standard tables.
The top-16 ranked players on all five tours well be invited to the championship play-offs, which this season will be contested at three different venues in May and June, 2013.
