  • Thank God for Matalan

A MINOR mishap in the trouser department forced a 20-year-old from Poole to dash to a well-known clothing store halfway through a snooker tournament.

Suitably attired, Bradley Chappell sped back to Salisbury Snooker Club and scooped the £50 first prize after edging home player James Bolton 3-2 on the black in a pulsating final.

Last season’s Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold Tour joint rankings winner opened his 2014/15 account in imperious style.

Having not dropped a frame in three group-stage matches, Chappell left the club at 3.40pm to compose himself as usual before the quarter-finals by listening to classical music.

Taking up the story, he said: “As I got into my dad’s car, my trousers split right down the middle. It was bad, it was really bad.

“Thank God for Matalan, they open until half four on Sundays. We got in the car and sped down there.”

Chappell returned to inflict a 3-1 defeat on Mark Lloyd (Stoke SC, Gosport), with whom he shared the 2013/14 title.

And he then avenged a 2-0 local league loss the previous Monday by knocking in an 87 break, the highest of the day, in a 3-0 victory over his Greenbaize clubmate Rikki Moore.

Paying tribute to 19-year-old Bolton, from Amesbury, after clearing the last few colours in a fifth-frame decider in the final, Chappell said: “I just said to James, ‘you’re the first player in four years to make me shake’. I felt pressured.

“(The final) was quality. It could’ve gone either way. We both played really well.

“James is a very good player - very, very steady. You’ve got to have the right mind game to play him. To find your rhythm against a player like James is very hard to do.

“You’ve got to beat the best to be the best. He is a fantastic player. It’s always nicer beating a player of a certain quality than what it is easing through a final.”

The event attracted a high-quality 15-strong field from across the south.

For the record, Chappell’s new trousers cost £10.

The second leg of eight is at Jesters Snooker Hall, Swindon, on Sunday, November 2.

    Girl power hits Salisbury

THAT’S another one in the eye for the lads!

The only girl in the 15-strong field for the first leg of the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Snooker Tour saw off the male opposition to claim her second winner’s trophy.

Surrey teenager Jasmine Bolsover defeated Lewis Parnham, who hails from the South West Snooker Academy, Gloucester, 2-0 in the final at Salisbury Snooker Club.

“It went really well,” declared the 14-year-old, who also won on home tables at Woking Snooker Centre last November.

“I potted some good balls. He is a good player. I was really pleased with my play.”

Despite being the only girl, Bolsover insists she’s no shrinking violet and she sent out a rallying call to female snooker players across the south.

“There should be more girls playing,” she said. “I’d like to do something to get more girls playing.

“I think they think it’s more of a male-dominated sport. I’m quite competitive with boys so I don’t find it intimidating.”

Bolsover topped her round-robin group on frames difference after beating Ally Pollard (Salisbury SC) and Matt Gillon (Stoke SC, Gosport), both 2-0, but losing 2-1 to Lee Fitzpatrick (Totton Recreation Club).

She then saw off two other Salisbury players, Kaine Petty and Callum McDonald, 2-0 in the knockout.

Sponsored by Eden Resources - a Singapore-based company that organises seminars, events and training - Bolsover plans to return to the World Ladies Billiards & Snooker Association circuit after Christmas.

The second leg of eight is at Jesters Snooker Hall, Swindon, on Sunday, November 2.

Early Bronze leader: “It’s a bit weird but I’ll take it.”

BOURNEMOUTH teenager David O’Callaghan says it feels “weird” to be leading the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Snooker Tour rankings.

The 15-year-old, who joined the junior circuit less than a year ago and had not been past the quarter-finals in his four previous outings, has now proved he is a winner.

A hard-fought 2-1 victory over Steven Hughes in the final of the first leg of the new season at Salisbury Snooker Club has put O’Callaghan in pole position for the rankings title.

“It’s great - but not so great because everyone’s chasing me,” he said. “It’s a bit weird but I’ll take it.

“And hopefully win the rankings and go up to Silver next year.”

O’Callaghan, whose top break is 38, made his Cuestars debut last January on home tables at Greenbaize Snooker Club, Bournemouth. He finished bottom of his group, repeated the feat at Chandler’s Ford the following month but rounded off the season with quarter-final exits at Fareham and Salisbury.

Hughes (Chandler’s Ford SC) has also never been past the last-eight before.

Meanwhile, ten-year-old Bowen Zhu made a dream debut. The latest product of the junior section at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club won all three group games, compiled a personal best 30 break in the first frame of a 2-0 quarter-final victory over Ryan Compton (Copnor Snooker Club, Portsmouth) before losing 2-0 to the eventual champion in the last-four.

The second leg of eight is at Jesters Snooker Hall, Swindon, on Sunday, November 2.
