O’Callaghan recovers from bizarre snooker injury to win in Fareham
A BOURNEMOUTH teenager recovered from a horrific and bizarre snooker injury to claim his first regional winner’s trophy for over two years.
David O’Callaghan moved up to third place on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour after overcoming rankings leader Charlie Pringle in the final of the seventh leg.
A well-crafted brown to black clearance wrapped up the 2-0 victory in the event hosted and sponsored by Fareham Snooker Club.
The 17-year-old, whose previous tournament success was on the Bronze Tour in Salisbury in October, 2014, admitted he was “shaking” on the black.
“It’s been a long time,” he said. “When I won that first one, I thought they’d come easier. But I’m so glad I’ve won.”
And he added: “Charlie played a lot better in the second frame but I just scrapped it out.”
O’Callaghan, who is studying business management at Bournemouth and Poole College, dislocated his left knee while competing in the Dorset Open at the Ambassador Club in Poole at the end of January.
Explaining the somewhat unusual injury, he said: “I was coming round to get the rest and I caught my pocket on the corner pocket and it twisted my knee.”
And he admitted: “It was painful.”
But a trip to hospital followed by physiotherapy meant he only missed the sixth leg in Havant.
Meanwhile, Pringle extended his lead over Chandler’s Ford clubmate Ryan Hughes to five points after knocking his title rival out 2-0 in the last-four. Hughes had progressed through his four group-stage matches without dropping a frame.
And Nat Kidner, appearing in his first Silver Tour semi-final since gaining promotion in 2014, was beaten 2-0 by his Greenbaize clubmate O’Callaghan.

Cyprus-bound Lloyd wins in Fareham
ENGLAND Under-18 snooker champion Mark Lloyd flies out to Cyprus this weekend on the back of a “not very good” winning performance.
Lloyd warmed up for next week’s European Under-18 Championship by collecting his fourth winner’s trophy this season on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold Tour.
In a repeat of the previous event in Havant, the 17-year-old from Gosport beat Bradley Cowdroy 2-0 in the final of the seventh leg hosted and sponsored by Fareham Snooker Club.
Reflecting on his play during the day, the rankings leader, who lost to 14-year-old Cowdroy (Bournemouth) in the group stages, said: “It was not very good.
“It’s grinding the matches and not getting fussed if you lose a frame. It was a struggle.”
Turning to Cyprus, he added: “If I play like I did today, it’s not going to be good. But if I play like I have been in practice, I’ll be fine.”
Meanwhile, Selsey teenager Arron Smith qualified for the knockout for the first time since his Cuestars debut a year ago. The 17-year-old went out 2-0 to Lloyd in the last-eight.
Two Chandler’s Ford players made the semi-finals. Fifth-placed Steven Hughes lost 2-1 from 1-0 up to Lloyd and Connor Benzey was beaten 2-0 by Cowdroy.
Jamie Wilson (Havant) made his first appearance in the knockout this season but lost 2-0 to Benzey.
Lloyd has a 46-point lead but the race for the runners-up spot is tight. Only 11 points separate second-placed Callum Browne (Trowbridge) and Benzey, in seventh.

Crump claims first win after year out
BEN Crump declared he was “just happy to be back” after claiming his first tournament win on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Bronze Tour.
The 17-year-old from Gosport cruised to victory without dropping a frame all day in the seventh leg hosted and sponsored by Fareham Snooker Club.
Competing in his first event for nearly a year, Crump, who has been concentrating on his studies at St Vincent College, won all four of his round-robin matches to qualify top of his group.
He then overcame Chloe White (Havant), Will Forster (Gosport) and first-time finalist Thomas Saunders (Braintree) all by 2-0 scorelines.
“It’s a shock,” he said. “I didn’t expect to get this far and win the competition.
“Some of the players have come on really well since the last time I played.
“I’m just happy to be back. Hopefully, I can win some more in the future.”
Crump had kept his hand in by turning out for his home club, Stoke SC, in the Gosport & Fareham Snooker League.
Meanwhile, rankings leader Riley Ellis (Wootton Bassett) extended his advantage to 12 points over Shane Kearns (Swindon) by beating his title rival 2-0 in the last-eight. The 12-year-old then went out 2-0 to Saunders, ten, in the semi-finals.
Remarkably, Ellis’ break of 36 in the group stages was the highest recorded in both the Bronze and Silver events.
And Forster topped his round-robin group to qualify for the knockout for the first time. The young potter then beat newcomer Riccardo Drayton (Chandler’s Ford) 2-1 before going out to Crump.

TWO friends from Salisbury Snooker Club fought out the Plate final during the seventh legs of the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold, Silver and Bronze Tours.
And it was Kaine Petty who prevailed 2-0 against Keegan Reed in the event hosted and sponsored by Fareham Snooker.
The two Silver Tour players had missed out on progressing from their round-robin groups but picked up some silverware in the straight knockout for non-qualifiers.
