  • Mears wins Championship Tour leg in Newbury

ALDERSHOT hotshot Ryan Mears has claimed his first tournament win of the season on the Frames Sports Bar Championship Tour.

The 31-year-old climbed to joint third place in the rankings following his success in the sixth leg at The Crucible Sports & Social Club, Newbury.

Mears compiled a 60 break in the deciding frame of his 3-2 victory over home player Ollie Douglas in the final to claim the ?100 first prize.

Dale Prout, another Newbury cueman, is one point ahead in second. He lost 3-1 to Mears in the last-four of the Cuestars event that was sponsored by Reading-based PL Auto Services.

Douglas defeated Jack Smithers (Tadworth, Surrey) 3-0 in the second semi.

It means Sean Harvey is the rankings champion. The Surrey star, who will collect ?500 prize money, won the first five legs and takes an unassailable lead into the remaining two tournaments.

Meanwhile, Jake Stewart narrowly beat Neil Herd (Frome) 3-2 in the Plate final. And the reigning Cuestars South Wilts Snooker League champion recorded the day’s highest break of 95 in the opening frame.

Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon, hosts the seventh leg of eight on Sunday, March 1.
