Hi all I am 32 and getting back into the game after 18 years! I sold my cue about 5 years ago as it was just gathering dust and now I’m trying to back into it again. I cannot believe the price of cues and balls used to get the tournament champions for 90 quid now that’s how much the premier set seems to cost. Any way I’m looking for a decent cue around 200 that is well made and nicely balanced. I like a 9.5/9.75 tip but don’t like it to feel like a broom on the bridge hand if you know what I mean. Any recommendations? I have no clue about these new cues like Phoenix and maximus. My old cue was a master cue ultimate but the local club has split comments saying if it was an old one then it’s decent apparently the newer ones aren’t as well made. Thanks guys! Let’s hope I can find the right cue and improve on my 68 break from when I was 14 lol

Try one of these cues, Master, Omin, Tom, ADR147, Ton Praram III, Andy Gibbs etc. Some of the higher end models by these cue makers go past the £200 budget. -

Probably best to have a trip out to some where that sells cues where you can try them out ,cues are not cheap any more ,better to get the right one that feels right .Comment

There’s a guy on here called Steve who makes his own. There are a few on eBay right now which look really well crafted and he gets very good feedback. His post is “My Workshop” in the cues section. I’m looking for a nice cue for my son so I’m in the same boat as you and it’s really confusing with all the new brands out there!!

It took me 5 cues over 5 years from when I started up again in 2015 after a 20+ year lay off from the game to find one I was really happy with. Here's what I learned:-
1# if you can try before you buy then definitely do so. Depending where you live an overnight stay is a good option. This place is run by an ex pro who understands cue specs really well. https://greenbaize.com/
2# if you can't visit somewhere like this (and they are few and far between tbh) then call them and talk to Stu at green baize about what sort of feel you are looking for.
3# try to remember how your old cue felt, did it have much flex, was it stiff , was the weight balanced out well in the cue or was it mainly in the butt of the cue etc.
4# fancy woods for splices push the cost of a cue up and up but will not make it play any better than a plain ebony (or other wood) cue.
5# if you want an ash shaft, and like to see chevrons down the cue, just remember the closer those chevrons are to each other the slower the wood has grown and therefore the stiffer the shaft will be.
The Thai cue brands you mention are all very decent cues, I ended up with a Tom Classic that I bought on eBay nearly new for £103 but I went through the Goldilocks and the three bears process to get there over last 5 years. (too flexy, too heavy, etc etc) don't recommend doing that.

One guy who has an interest in cues and is basically the local cue dealer for mastercue and maximus and gets a few parris cues in now again but hes a sales man if you know what I mean he’s not interested in me getting the right cue.Comment

There is a guy in Larne (Northern Ireland) 30 mins away from me I found him on eBay selling Tom cues. I think the master cues are too much nowadays even the machine spliced models are expensive and I’m told they don’t hold the same quality as back in my days when everyone had to have one. So I’ve narrowed it down to these makes that I like the look of
