  • Double vision HELP!

    Hi all,
ive played the game since schools and now I’m 43, but over the part 18,on this I had started noticing my eye sight would go double when I’m on the shot. It has got worse and worse to a point now that as soon as I start to bend down to any shot long or short, I see two of everything. I have been to three opticians, my eye sight is superb, better than 20/20, I only ever experience this double vision playing snooker. I’ve tried prisms in glasses and they made no difference.
what could it be? I thought eye muscles but prisms should have helped that. I am over weight so could I have lost the ability to tilt my head back far enough or trapped a nerve? My blood pressure is high, could it be this?
has anyone else ever experienced this? The only way I can even hit a ball now is to shut one eye which is no fun.
any ideas or suggestions please as it’s my passion and I feel lost without it.

Do you still get double vision if you try a more upright stance?

No if I stay upright it’s fine, but once I’m say a foot from the cue things go double.

If the optician and docs think your ok ,could be a pinched nerve in the neck that shows up when in a certain position .Does it happen on all snooker tables ,could be different lighting conditions ,try cueing over a dinning room table with a couple of balls or objects on there in daylight conditions .

Hi, thanks for your replies. Funnily enough I just this morning thought is it just my home table. I may try a different table and see the affects.
I have a hospital referral so maybe they can check for a nerve issue.
it doesn’t appear to happen at home if I use a table. Very strange

I've no idea but you need to be persistant with the NHS as they'll fob you off for years if they can. Ask for a second opinion, that usually speeds things up a bit.

                        Hi Matt

I also suffer from this and haven't found a cure as of yet, the docs and optician didn't find a solution so I'd be interested if you get a decent resolution.

I suffer from dry eye and this helped but didn't stop the double vision at snooker when I bend right down. I use a night gel and eye drops which have cured it when standing up.

I generally use disposable contact lenses with snooker and with these I don;t get any issues when bending down, strange.

I obtained some snooker specs which gave me brilliant vision but at the lowest point of bending down it all goes awry which is a shame.

I had the same thing. I did not see an optician. I saw an orthoptist / surgeon.

I underwent several tests. One involving covering each eye and pointing at things on a light-board with a stick. I think it was called a Hess Screen Test.

After about 45 minutes of testing, his diagnosis was "muscle imbance on upgaze".

He explained that the eye muscles can get weaker as you get older. But sometimes they do not weaken evenly in both eyes. So when you look upwards, one eye does not pull upwards (or sideways) as much as the other eye. He said that this can cause both horizontal and vertical double vision, and sometimes a combination of both. (This is what I have.)

He said it could possibly be cured by an operation, where he "popped my eye out" , and re-attached the muscle in a slightly different place. But it would cost at least £10,000, there was no guarantee of success, and there was also the possibility of getting double vision when looking straight ahead. In effect, telling me that he really did not recommend me having the operation.

I tried fresnel lenses (prisms) but I could not get on with them at all. I also tried exercises to try to make my head bend back further, so I did not have to look upwards so much. But they did not work at all and just made my neck hurt.

So now I have to play with my chin a foot above the cue or not play at all. I chose to not play at all any more. It's sad, and I miss it. But what can you do?

                            That's not good.

This does sound like what could be happening to me with glasses.

What I will say which may or may not help you is I do not get the same issue with daily disposable contact lenses for some reason. I don't know why but it's a problem every time I put the glasses on and try and get my chin on the cue; it's perfect all the way down until the last movement.

Maybe have a go with the contact lense test and they give you a small pack to try.

From what you wrote, I think it's good news for you.

If you don't get double vision whan using contact lenses, there can't be anything wrong with the muscles in your eyes.

I think it might be worth trying a new set of snooker specs.
