Another Canuck from Port Moody BC Recently discovered TSF- what a great site for snooker buffs! First started playing 8-ball in 1973, then graduated to snooker in 1973, when I heard about a seniors' snooker league played in various centres around the Lower Mainland. It's good competition(breaks over 100 sometimes happen) and it gives me the opportunity to meet and associate with many interesting people. It's a team game with four pairs of partners per team. Tables are 5 by 10. I had been using 17 or 18oz cues with 10 1/2mm tips. Lately though, have been experimenting with bigger tips. Because I still have my old pool cues, I bought an Intimidator shaft with 11.75mm Moori tip, the smallest Mcdermott makes. It is a low-deflection shaft. So far, I've been pleased with results. Less squirt makes me more confident. Am also awaiting delivery of a Schmelke 17oz cue with 11mm laminated shaft and tip. I'm not obsessive or anything like that! Anyway, I'm wondering if there are people reading this that have tried larger tips for snooker and what they have found? In the meantime, I'll be happily plowing through the many threads of wisdom!

    Welcome to TSF
I personally play with a 10mm. Lots of people seem to think that the smaller tip will give you more spin on the cueball but personally I don't see the need and find 10 to be a nice size.
Peter Ebdon plays with an 11mm and so does fergal o brien I believe.

          I believe Michael Holt uses a 9mm semi-automatic.

I agree. Most of us should be using a tip of between 9.5mm and 10mm.

I think if your tip is too big you will have problem when the cue ball is tight on the cushion and you might not be able to strike your cue ball as precisely as you should.

I also find it harder to aim with the big tip on long pots. But you are playing on a 10 feet so it is probably not as big an issue as if you are playing on a full sized table.

I personally prefer 10mm, or a bit under like 9.75mm.
