  • I'm new, too...

    :snooker:
Hi, I'm Meredith. I'm originally from NYC but I live in England now. I've only started learning to play Snooker over the summer, but have enjoyed watching matches for the last five years with my favorite players being Ronnie O'Sullivan, Steve Davis, Stephen Maguire and Neil Robertson(or whom ever seems to be playing well during a tournament if these guys are sent home...). I still don't understand all of the rules but enough to be interested and follow along with the matches(I finally know what a "free ball" is, but I don't understand in/off?)

I'd have to say attending the Masters this year on opening day was the most enjoyable experience so far...but I'm attending the October 1st premire league event, so who knows?

An 'in-off' is when the cue-ball hits an object ball and then the cue-ball drops into a pocket.

Thanks, Tim! It's these sorts of calls during matches that get me tripped up sometimes, by the time I question it, the game has moved on...

and thanks to all for the welcome

I'm out in Essex now as well, but part of one of the london boroughs, which has been a bit of adjustment as the area is more like living in the country but similar because Central London has the big city rush of a place like Manhattan. One big difference I noticed was when I first went into a "subway" there were no trains

Yes, almost a year here but can't lose the Bklyn accent(can't fool anyone, oh well..)

As far as Snooker is concerned, a place like Brooklyn was more common to have Pool and Billiard Halls. I remember them being more popular hangouts in my area of south Brooklyn in the 80s and 90s, but many closed and probably more ten pin Bowling alleys could be found(not too many of those left either sadly). On occassion, I'd play 8 ball pool but just for fun as it would be miraculous if a ball fell in a pocket.

I've been learning to play Snooker during the summer and would like to learn a few skills, mostly proper Bridges, but I'm perfectly happy with a high break of 3 or 4 only because I enjoy watching pro matches, but still fun.
