  • Hello from Somerset (UK)

Just a quick hello from a suffering snooker player.

Ive been playing regularly for about 15 years now and seemed to have reached a plateau in my abilities.

High break is 43 and I am desperate to hit my first 50 but this just seems a dream at the moment. I regularly hit 30s and 40s now and again but cannot seem to progress any further

I play every week against a freind of mine and we always do a best of 9.

I used to play in the local league but gave that up as I did not really enjoy the format, 1 frame of doubles and 1 single frame all night.

As you might have gathered from my name I have a passion for wristwatches ans am a regular poster on various forums in that field.

Im currantly looking for a new cue and am looking for a Parris (who isnt) so if you know of any available or have one for sale please let me know.

    Hi Ben

Whereabouts in Somerset are you based?

Have you ever thought about sharpening you matchplay on the South of England Cuestars circuit?

Details can be found at cuestars.uk.com.

      ben4watches:

Unless you have a physical or visual disability there's absolutely no reason why, after 15 years, you are not running CENTURIES (unless, of course) you have one or more serious flaws in your technique.

The best suggestion I can give you is to either go to a coach (there should be a decent one in your area somewhere) or else get a good instructional book and do EXACTLY what is says in there. The absolute best with the most detail was done by Joe Davis (How I Play Snooker or Complete Snooker) over 50 years ago, Frank Callan's book is also very good but sadly both are out of print right now.

The next best thing would be to buy Nic Barrow's instructional DVDs and again do EXACTLY what he covers in the 10 DVDs (they cost around 175quid these days if you join his website).

Or else, join TheSnookerGym.com/Bronze (it's free) and try out the instructions in there by Nic Barrow and myself.

Lastly, check out all the coaching strings on this website as there's a ton of information on proper technique (a lot of it by me) and if you follow that guidance you WILL improve. Pay special attention to where I describe the 7 basic principles of proper (or ideal) technique.

One last note...a John Parris cue is good although there are better around for a better price too. Check the cue strings on this forum also as there are some very good cuemakers who are members here. You would get a much better cue if you go to 'ADR147' or Mike Wooldridge or Tony Wilson or unclevit (who sells Omin and other cues made in Thailand)

I guess I would have to Ronnie of the modern players for his natural ability and flare around the table.

Alex Higgins has to be admired for bringing the game to the masses and really making it what it is now, again a player with oodles of ability and a loved to perform to the crowd.

And you cant ignore Jimmy White, without question the best player never to win the world title.
