  • Hello

Hello I'm a newbie member; I thought I would join up so I could have a look at some reviews and see what cue makers are out there:snooker:.

I have played snooker off and on for the last 20 years. I have owned a few cues, parish burrows and watts Wooldridge and peradon also cheaper cues like riley etc ( also some American cues now like Mcdermott and different shafts like predator etc).

About two and a half years ago I went to the USA and gave my cues away to all my friends (You should have seen how happy they were). The best made cue I think I personally owned at the time was a Wooldridge cue in terms of quality of woods, and manufacturing of the cue it self (didn’t make any difference to how I missed the ball) .

Now I’m coming back to the UK and I have been searching the forum for some reasonably priced cue’s for around 200 pounds (sorry no UK pound sign. The pound sign in the USA is #. ). My preference would be hand finished. So I looked at the information at hand on the forum.

I would love to of purchased a Wooldridge cue but my budget just doesn’t allow (although if I may be permitted to say they are exceptionally fine cues). Also I was not able to pick certain specs online which I would have liked to on the shark range( yes I could have rang but felt I would try some one else).

I have finally decided to go with a wright cue I did not see any bad reports so I thought this may be a good hand made cue at a lower price. After speaking to Reg at wright cues he mentioned that he was a smaller business and had lower overhead costs so he could build and sell cues at lower prices. I will try to post pic’s and my view on the cue, when I receive the cue in around eight weeks, may be quicker if I’m lucky.

I choose an ash shaft from his 1997 vintage aged stock and an ebony butt with a thicker than normal Maple venner and a single paduk facing. Part of purchasing a hand finished cue is so I can choose some specs, as I have been playing with larger tips in the USA playing 9 ball etc. Cue spec’s chosen by me was 147.32 cm or 58” long 31mm Butt size 10.5mm tip size. Price for the cue was 190 pounds within my budget I also added the SD joint on the butt (no laughing please about a butt with a joint) a small adjustable extension which added 35 pounds.

Yes the cue tip is a little larger then the old standard 10mm and these days’ people play with closer to 9mm tips. I believe that a slightly larger tip helps you hit the ball in a straighter line. Imparting side is less friendly, but at my standard or ability or level that I play snooker at, which is I don’t get breaks much over 50, I should stick to hitting the centre of the ball more and using side when really required.

Ooopps sorry about the length of post I will try to keep it down a bit in future.

    Thanks
    Steve O

Hello Stephenoff and welcome to the forum , the only problem with you buying a uk cue for that money is the delivery will take up a fair amount of the cost . so you would be looking closer to the £200 mark rather than the £150 mark really .

Hello Hotpot, Thanks for the prompt reply. I mentioned I was coming back to the UK as my job in the USA is finishing due to plant closer.

I actually put the order into Wright cues so when I get back It won't be long before the cue is ready.

Hello Quakers and Neil I'm from Oxfordshire in a small town called Banbury. I also look forward to a Wright cue . I was looking for reviews initially but no one had any reviews on the forum that I could find so I hope all will be good. I also needed a cue maker with an online site.

I will mention one thing; I don’t believe you can upgrade a cue. In the sense that if you purchase a cheap cue (I did when I was younger) and you play well, then someone takes you cue (you purchase a hand built cue) or you believe that if you buy a Hand built from TW or MW etc. It may not improve you game and ability and you may not play as well as with the old cue you had. Whence I receive my cue I hope it suits me and I will not upgrade my cue ( but I may add a cue or two so I have a nice collection ).

welcome...I too am stuck with a keyboard that thinks the pound is a load of ####

I usually just cut and past the pound symbol it's a pain in the ass.
