  • Also need advice please !!!!

Hi guys I'm John and have just signed up to the forum. Looking for some advice from those who know their stuff. I have inherited what I think might be an antique snooker table plus some accessories, all noted below:-

    Burroughs & Watts 3/4 (10ft x 5ft) slate bed billiard/snooker table with Arrowflite cushion

Scoreboard made by J Muir Wilson, Maker, Glasgow

    Various cues:-
    4 x J Muir Wilson – 16.5oz, 15.5oz, 14oz, 14oz, 13.5oz
    2 x Orme & Sons – 15.5oz, 16oz
    2 x H Nelmes & Co – unknown
1 very large cue – no identification
1 medium size cue – no identification

Is there anyone who has any knowledge as to the value, if any, attached to these items .....would be grateful to hear your views.

    Cheers.

    John

I would say £200-£500 for the lot.

But then I am not one of "those who know their stuff."

    Welcome to TSF.

In the UserCP (link on green bar, almost at top of page), under Networking, you can click Pictures & Albums to add photos to an album, then when typing a message you can click [Insert] (-> over on the right there) and insert an image.

But.. I think you need to have 10 posts to do this.

But.. the odd thing is you have a post count of 0!? when you've clearly posted at least 2 .. puzzling.

                    Nelmes

Antiques indeed mate...a proper collectors lot. The table requires a lot of work yet the cues and table have got some age to it.
I have a Nelmes cue and it has multiple splicing and veneers. Nelmes was a company that made billiard tournament tables that were that highly thought off at the time that they were used in the same equivalent to what our pros would play on today.
There is a bbc archive if you put Nelmes into a search engine that tells you more as well as on this website. With regards to cost and sell on value, the collectors are very fickle and they like antique collectors have names which are more sought after than the rest.
Unfortunately..Nelmes is not considered one of them yet I do think that this is unfair as the quality is right up there. I would suggest that you find an antiques collector for tables and cues within this forum and they would be able to direct you further. It could be worth a couple of quid to research and I wish you all the luck in doing so...regards

Tammajock....really appreciate you taking the time to come back with some helpful advice mate.....it's really good of you. Have been googling various sites over the weekend and actually did come across the BBC site you refer to, amongst many others, but really do think the best advice comes from people like yourself who have the interest and the knowledge in the subject.......I will take your advice and look for someone within the forum and will certainly let you know how I get on...many thanks once again, regards.

No problem mate...As the users of this forum will remind you off....age of the item does not always mean " Its worth somethin ", yet with the Nelmes and Muir. These were Scottish makers that were very highly thought of at the time. So much so that their tables were used in proffessional billiard tournaments.
With the Nelmes cue that I have, I sent it down to a fella called Dave Coutts who refurbished it. Similar to the condition that your cues are in at the moment and he said that my cue was one of the best cues that he has ever seen for its age and the work that has went into it. He also said that if you ordered a similar cue from John Parris that you would not get much change from a 1000 pounds!!! To cut a long story short mate as I am a fellow Scot.
These cues and table are worth a few quid yet Im betting you wont get offered the money Im guessing you are looking for as like all antiques , the value varies greatly to what is "in" at the moment. Just wish I could help further and look up Nelmes in the search area at the top of the page and it comes up with discussions that I have had as well. Pictures of Nelmes scoreboards and these cues are sought after. The quality is there for everyone to see. Keep me in touch to how you get on....regards
