  • touching ball

Player A is 33 points behind with colours left on and has played a snooker behind the black leaving it touching ball.
Player B fails to hit the yellow and does not strike any other ball.In this situation like with any other touching ball is the player deemed to have hit the black?
And secondly am I correct in saying that in a professional game the referee would refuse to tell the player that the ball was touching as it would give him an unfair advantage because he could deliberately strike a ball of smaller value and not be called a miss because his opponent needs snookers
I have called this touching ball rule many times and have had many arguments

IIRc the only time you can foul a touching ball irrespective of what colour it is, is when you actual make a shot which moves it before any other ball

and value of foul would be ball on - yellow so 4 points foul

touching balls i think are called irrespective of balls left and scores

On your first point, no he is not deemed to have hit the black. That only happens when you're touching a ball on. If you touching another ball you are not deemed to have hit it.

On your second point, in a pro match the referee would normally declare a touching ball just so everyone knows even though you won't necessarily be deemed to have hit it if it's not the ball on.

It would appear that you're having lots of arguments about this rule because you don't understand properly.

I have seen this rule applied in pro snooker on tv a long time ago though. Is it possible that there was a change in the rules

          No, you're just mistaken.

The referee would NOT (or at least, shoult not) declare a touching ball because it is not a 'touching ball' situation. The 'touching ball' situation only applies if the cue-ball is touching a ball on.

In your situation, it makes no difference whether it is touching the black or not - because he still has to try to hit the yellow.

However, if asked by the striker, the referee will answer if the cue ball is touching the black - yes or no. He won't say touching ball, because that phrase has a specific meaning in the rules - ie that the cue ball is touching a ball that is or could be on. In the scenario quoted the yellow is the ball on and the black is simply another object ball.
