  • Newbie in East Surrey

    Hi there

I'm a newbie, been lurking for a bit but now is a good time to introduce myself.
I've been playing snooker for about a year more or less once a week. A friend and I have young kids and, since they're no longer babies, use it as an excuse to get out the house as much as anything else.
But I'm trying hard to improve and really enjoy it.
My best break is 18 which is not great but realistically if I manage two or three 9 breaks in a game, I feel like I've done myself justice. I can pot balls, I just can't always pot one after the other as my positional play is really in need of work.
I recently turned 40 and arranged that anyone who wanted to give me a present put in a donation towards a new cue. I managed to get a new Mike Wooldridge Shark Cue out of that which is brilliant. After using a £30 cue from the local sport shop I cannot describe the difference. It hasn't made me better instantly but I can feel what is going on and for the first time have started to make progress on putting the cue ball in the general area that I want it to go.

I play a Riley's in Redhill as it is the only place that I know of near me. I'd love to hear from anyone in the area.

Thanks to all the posters on this forum, I've already learned a great deal from you all.

    Regards
    Colin

Hi Colin. I play in a handicapped tournament every Wed night (tonight) at the Epsom Snooker club (High St, Epsom, above McDonalds) from 8pm if you're interested. We could do with a few more players as some nights we only get 6-8, whereas 10-12 is a better number. Despite my low high break (mid 20s) I have managed to win the tournament once or twice and come 2nd a few times (because it's handicapped).. which is a nice bonus especially as it's a cash tournament and winner + 2nd place take shares of the £5 entry fees.

Thanks nrage, I will check it out. The idea of a handicapped system definately appeals to me at my level. I saw you mention Frames in Coulsdon in another thread, was that any good? I'm looking for alternatives to Rileys as, though it is very convenient and the staff are generally nice, the place is a tad moth eaten and too hot in summer and too cold in winter.

Frames is ok, it's got a number of tables and is usually fairly quiet in the snooker room upstairs. The most I've seen is 5 or 6 tables going and that was on a night when a tournament or league was being played. They sometimes have functions/partys and/or just get busy downstairs where the pool tables and big screens are.

The tables are in reasonable condition, nothing too major wrong with them. The equipment is a bit worn and it's common to have to hunt the room for a couple of decent rests, or a cue if you don't have your own.

The staff are nice enough, some more friendly than others. There is a guy offering coaching and I've seen him play from a few tables over, he looked quite good, not sure what his coaching is like tho.

I didn't notice it being too hot or cold.. not like Epsom was a few months back when the radiators were out, it was colder inside than out!

Membership is only £5, and tables are .. I forget, something like £7.00 or £7.50/hr. There are 2 private snooker rooms which are £8 or £8.50/hr.

Maybe we could meet up for a frame or two one night, I still have membership there tho I play in Epsom more often as it's closer to home.
