  • Introduction - another Canuck

I’ve posted a few times but neglected to introduce myself.

    Mark from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

I played a lot of snooker in my teens during the 60’s. University, family and career halted my misspent youth for 35 years.

Just getting back into it as I plan to misspend my retirement. I was a decent club player but shot on instinct. Once back at it, I made the mistake of trying to analyze my technique. I altered stance, grip, cue position eye movement etc and everything went to “pot”.

Fortunately I found this forum and read almost all of the coaching advice. It helped enormously. WHEN I do everything correctly the balls home in on pockets like laser guided missiles and positional play is starting to improve.

The ANAVET club I play at is a long way from home but cost is $1.50 / hour. Approximatley one GBP. I’m way ahead as other pool halls don’t have good tables, if any 6 X 12’s, and generally charge $6 – 8.00 + / hour.

I was also very fortunate to find Airin through the forum. First contact to cue in hand was about two weeks. My Aurora cue is a pleasure to use.

Snooker is not televised in Canada but I’ve watched matches on very good quality live streaming channels listed on the forum.

Thanks to everyone on the forum for improving my total snookering experience.

    Regards eh!

    Mark:

Welcome to the Forum from a fellow Canuk and one of those coaches you've undoubtedly read comments.

Don't know if you're in Winnipeg or not, but Stan Chartrand from there plays in the Canadian Championships almost every year and I believe they hold qualifiers in a club in downtown (is it Las Vegas Billiards?) Not sure of the club name but I'm sure you'll know.

Canadians are in Toronto at Shooters in mid-June again this year and I'm sure there's likely an open spot for one more player from Manitoba, Stan could tell you. It cost $325 for each position but that is usually raised from the qualifying tournaments. Hotel would be around $85 + tax (of course) for a double, so about $45 per person per night.

      Terry,

All of your posts are read with interest and coaching suggestions are put to the test.

Stan plays out of ANAVETS and I do know him. He started a masters league for some of the best in Winnipeg play. I don't get out to see them play as often as I'd like as their league night is different from my singles and doubles evenings.

I plan to be at a conference in Guelph first part of June. If I can, I'd like to squeeze in a few additional days and if your around at that time would like to visit with you. Alma is 30 to 45 minutes from Guelph if I found the right location?

I'm almost at ten posts so should be able to PM you soon.

Alma is about 30 minutes almost dead north of Guelph up County Road #7. Turn left at the Alma lights onto County Road #17 and my house is the last on your left. Brick bungalow with cedar fencing and side-loaded double garage. Although you can't see it from the road, also a BCE Westbury in the basement.

I will be here practicing like mad for the Canadians starting around June 14th I think, so I will be available in early June.
