  • New to the forum + a question

Hi i´m new to the whole snooker world and is trying to catch up on how the game works. I saw my first snooker game for like six years ago, off course it was "The Rocket", hehe. But lately i have started to fall for the game, little bit older and a little bit wiser.

But the thing is. I have read a lot about the rules of the game witch i have, kind of, clear but i´m really confused over the whole ranking system. I cant find information anywhere that is helpful, it seems.

I know the whole thing about that this years points in a ranking event replaces the points of the same event two years ago. But how does the tournament seeding works? Does the top 16 qualify automatic, and does the next 16 come from the qualification-tournament?

Sorry if I posted this wrong but didn't know where els... Thanks

Welcome to the forum, The top 16 are automatically seeded into every event and get automatic invites to invitational events (The Masters etc), the rest have to qualify.

Look at this qualifying table to see how that works - http://thesnookerforum.com/Tournamen...011-qualifying

There are is a seeding list, a ranking list and 3 cut off points through out the year.

The points schedule is here - http://www.worldsnooker.com/staticFi...~163207,00.doc
Here is the seeding list from the last cut off point - http://www.worldsnooker.com/page/See...216635,00.html
Here is the current Ranking list which is upto date after PTC 9 - http://www.worldsnooker.com/page/Wor...216576,00.html

The cut off points for the seeding list are marked on the calendar here - http://www.worldsnooker.com/page/Tou...s/FullCalendar

The top 16 play the qualifiers from the previous round, just as the players ranked 17-32 in the world play the qualifiers from the previous round, just as the players ranked 33-48 play the qualifiers....ditto for 49-64 etc.

The only time a player outside the top 16 is automatically qualified for the last 32 of an event is if he is the defending champion of the event, but if a player not in the top 16 becomes world champion (Like Shaun Murphy did in 2005 then he is seeded n0 2 for every event the following season and the N0 16 seed as to play one qualifying rd to get to the last 32 of events. also in 2006 Ding Jun Hui was the China Open Defending Champion (Seeded 1 For the event - World ranked 27) and Shaun Murphy was the world champion (Seeded 2) - world ranked 21 so Both Steve Davis Ranked 15 And Ian McCulloch Ranked 16 both had to qualify for China and Steve Davis didn't relise he had to qualify that year so Ricky Walden got a walkover to the last 32 of the event.

Hope this helps or and btw welcome to the Snooker Forum

Thanks for the answers. I think i got it now.
So the top 16 is automatically qualifying to any event if not the defending champion or the world champion is outside the top 16, and in that case the player ranked 16th and/or 15th have to qualify?

I looked at the Shanghai sheet... Is the case there that first the players ranked 81 - 96 meet the players ranked 65 - 80 and the winners meet the players ranked 49 - 64 and so on?

But i looked at the German Master qualifying sheet now (http://www.worldsnooker.com/page/Ger...528508,00.html)

Here it stands that Jimmy White played in the first round but he his ranked 52? Or is the Preliminary round counted as the first round? So that the Player ranked 65-80 met the ones who where ranked 81-96? Maybe this sound obvious to you but i didn't rely get the Preliminary round thing...
