If you don't know anyone else who can do it, and you struggle to do it yourself (I can never seem to get the tip perfectly in line with the ferrul), who else are you meant to take it to? If they don't want to re-tip cues, why bother advertising a retipping service on their website? Plus, it gets customers into their shop who might then spend money on a cue or other accessories. And I'm under no illusion that John Parris will be retipping my cue himself, in the same way that I wouldn't expect Gordon Ramsay to cook my meal in one of his restaurants.
Thanks for the reply though - very helpful.

I suppose you're right, it's an excuse to look around. I don't know where you play but snooker halls usually have someone who can do a decent job and I would think that there are more of those than cue makers. In that case I would ask to choose the tip first and JP has some advice on his website using the scratch test. I've found that it works well.Tear up that manure-fed astroturf!

Another recommendation for Craftsman, I took mine in Tuesday lunch and as it was quet they did it in 5 mins while I waited. It's not a difficult job and when I'm doing my collection I'll do them all myself. With my playing cue, given the cost of some of the tips today too, it's easier to let someone you trust do it... espicially if you're like me and have slightly shakey hands!Last edited by perpetualboredom; 2 June 2012, 08:07 AM.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Agreed. I'm probably the most impractical human on this planet but I think I could re-tip my cue. Sanding and getting a nice dome might take a few attempts but unless you have been a real dope, you aren't going to ruin your cue if you mess up the re-tipping. I think people like peace of mind knowing it's been done properly.
