  • I like defense!

Hi, i just want to say that i like players that can handle the their defense play. I like Doherty, Ebdon for example. Players like Higgins, Murphy for example, dont have the same strenght in their defense. What do you think is most important?

for example I don't think Doherty rules - but yeah defence is important but used when the opponent is stronger; look at O sullivan, you play defensive or not against him it doesn't bother him that much when he is on course...he is simply too strong. Davis the master of safety , what did he win lately ??
I saw that going differently in my mind

      Welcome

I think defence is very important, but mainly used as a backup for attacking play. The chronic winners of the game have always been the break builders.

I think two quotations, by Ken himself highlight this point:

'The balls aren't always going to be set up where you can go in and make 60, 70 or 80 at a time. So you need a plan B.

That's when you need to go on the defensive.'

'But remember, success in this game is about potting balls.'

I do agree with you that Doherty and Ebdon are the most consistently good defensive players...but I wouldn't say any of the other top 16 are bad at it....not at all! They wouldn't be there if they were!

Safety is pne way of gaining an opening. The other is long potting. Shrewd safety, if you are good at it, will take the pressure off having to make those outstanding long pots. Good safety is as much down to knowledge of the table as down to pure skill to execute the stroke.

Ronnie is hard to play aginst, IMHO, not because he is a good long potter but, because of his knowledge of the table. His safety is superb and, of course, so is his ability to exploit the chances once the error is made.
