  • Hello from Cork, Ireland

    Hello everyone!

A few weeks ago I ended up in quite a large late bar. In there was myself and my friends, a couple arguing (and then making up) on the couch, the bar staff, a DJ and the owner. There was also a pool table. With nothing going on we decided we'd knock a few balls about. I hadn't played pool in about 12 years but still won both my games. I think the ability I had to hit the cue ball off the appropriate colour ball on a consistent basis put me in a different class to my opponents.

I had a grand aul time doing this, and remembered how much I enjoyed cue sports as a teenager: skiving off school and playing for cigarette money. I wasn't too bad then either. I won most of the time against random school-aged opponents. Although there was one guy who both me and my pool best-buddy could rarely beat. It was always worth losing a pound to him though because our game improved so much in mostly losing to him.

With all this in mind I decided to try my hand at some snooker. None of my friends would join me but today I headed to a local snooker hall. I spent an hour and a half pleasantly not potting much at all. I already posted in the Coaching section and got a few ideas. I spent my time hitting a straight ball off the blue spot and trying to roll the cue ball in after it (I could pot it 4/5 times and get the cue ball to follow about 1/5 times.) I also lined up five balls, one the black spot, one on the pink spot, two in between and one below the black. I didn't try with a black being respotted, all red and the best I did was three balls in a row (fluke) and managed two a couple of times. And finally I was just rolling the cue ball the length of the table and trying to get it to come back to the cue (all this left me a bit squint eyed.)

This snooker business is harder than it looks on telly.

So hello to everyone, I hope you enjoyed my life story!
