  • How many points should I be penalized?

    Hi all,

    I came across 2 situations:

    1. I missed the RED ball but the cue ball firstly touched a GREEN ball then accidentally made the BLACK ball off.

    How many points should I be penalized?

    2. I missed the RED ball but the cue ball firstly touched a GREEN ball then touched the BLACK.

    How many points should I be penalized?

    Thanks a lot!

      then accidentally made the BLACK ball off
      If he pockets the black ball in then it's a seven point penalty, is it not?

          I thought the foul by pocketing the higher scoring ball supersedes the initial foul...

          I'm happy to be incorrect, but I have always subscribed to that theory.

              If you pot the black, 7 if you go in off the black, after hitting the green first, 4.

              In the scenario not involving the black, 4.

                  I've always thought once a colour ball has been nominated any fouls thereafter equal the points of that ball with a minimum of 4 for yellow green and brown but might be wrong So if I nominate the black but hit the yellow it's still 7 points away. Am I right buddy?

                    I would have thought 7 for the 1st foul of hitting the green but potting the black ,and 4 for hitting the green ball as u hit it before the black

                      No. Some fouls are penalised with the value of the ball on, some with the higher of the ball on or ball concerned whichever is higher, and some are automatically seven points.

                        To be pedantic a pot is the legal potting of a ball. Therefore if a ball enters a ball as part of a foul it isn't considered to be potted! It is usually refereed to as being pocketed.

                          If, by saying 'made the black ball off' you mean the black entered the pocket, then the penalty is seven points. Two fouls have been committed: first you have first hit a ball not on, and secondly you've caused a ball not on to enter a pocket, so the higher penalty of seven points applies. This is the higher of the ball on and the ball concerned.

                          In the second example the only foul to have been committed was that the cue ball first made contact with a ball not on (green), so the penalty is four points. It doesn't matter what further balls the cue ball then hits, as long as another foul (like pocketing one of them) is not committed.

                            Here is the full rule on penalties for information:

                            10. Penalties.
                            The following acts are fouls and incur a penalty of four points unless a higher one is indicated in paragraphs (a) to (d) below. Penalties are:
                            (a) value of the ball on by:
                            (i) striking before the referee has completed the spotting of a colour taken as a free ball;
                            (ii) striking the cue-ball more than once during a stroke;
                            (iii) striking when both feet are off the floor;
                            (iv) playing out of turn, or playing a stroke before his opponent’s turn has ended contrary to Section 2 Rule 6 (e);
                            (v) playing improperly from in-hand, including at the opening stroke;
                            (vi) causing the cue-ball to miss all object balls;
                            (vii) causing the cue-ball to enter a pocket;
                            (viii) causing the cue-ball to be snookered behind a free ball, except as provided for in Section 3 Rule 12(b)(ii);
                            (ix) playing a jump shot;
                            (x) playing with a non-standard cue; or
                            (xi) conferring with a partner contrary to Section 3 Rule 17(e);
                            (b) value of the ball on or ball concerned, whichever is higher, by:
                            (i) striking when any ball is not at rest;
                            (ii) striking before the referee has completed the spotting of a colour that is not a free ball;
                            (iii) causing a ball not on to enter a pocket;
                            (iv) causing the cue-ball to first hit a ball not on;
                            (v) making a push stroke;
                            (vi) touching a ball or ball marker in play, other than in the lawful execution of a stroke; or
                            (vii) causing a ball to be forced off the table;
                            (c) value of the ball on or higher value of the two balls concerned by causing the cue-ball to first hit simultaneously two balls, other than two Reds (when Red is the ball on) or a free ball and a ball on;
                            (d) seven points if the striker:

                            (i) uses a ball off the table for any purpose;
                            (ii) uses any object to measure gaps or distance;
                            (iii) plays at Reds, or a free ball followed by a Red, in successive strokes;
                            (iv) uses any ball other than White as the cue-ball for any stroke after the frame has started;
                            (v) fails to declare which ball he is on when snookered or when requested to do so by the referee; or
                            (vi) after potting a Red (or free ball nominated as a Red), commits a foul before a colour has been nominated.

                              Ooopps! Think when I do the scoreboard for mates whilst playing them I maybe scoring them with more points than I should.

                              I should pay more attention!

                              Many thanks buddy.
