  • Hello from Helsinki, Finland

    Hi,

just started playing snooker more regularly and I found this forum while searching for snooker-related stuff on the internet.

I used to play a lot of pool/snooker when I was a kid and we had a 7' table at home. After years of virtually not playing at all (just watching tournaments on TV), I realized I live close to a bowling-hall with three snooker tables. At first it felt like my 11-year-old self would have kicked my butt, but after a while I got the hang of it. It's so much fun in the beginning when you feel like you're improving your game every time you play. I hope it's still this much fun after a couple of years.

    Tervetuloa vaan

I'm a Finn too but live in London. It's a shame that snooker seems to be a bit of a dying thing in Finland. Not many places have full size snooker tables anymore...

      No terve.

At least in Helsinki I think the price is the biggest problem. I know a few places that aren't that far away, but the price per hour can be close to 20 €. I try to play during the day when it's a bit cheaper, but 10 € is probably the lowest price in town. Of course there are a few clubs with monthly fees, but nothing close to where I live.

Yikes I pay $6.50 per hour at the local pool hall
and $7.00 for all the snooker you can play from
          10am - 5pm every sunday.

Yikes. That's pretty expensive. And welcome to the forum.

Lol, so true neil I have seen snooker tables go for under £200 so could save a fortune if you had room.

Yeah, if I HAD room. Problem is where I live the extra space needed costs 3000-4000 € per square metre.

And now you know why the price is close to 20€ per hour.

Welcome to TSF. Go for the clubs nearest you and get a membership. 20€/hour is just plain crazy and allows for some travelling costs. Besides, clubs are likely to have some infrastructure, coaching & tournaments as well. Isn't Robin Hull playing somewhere in Helsinki?

At the World Championships I met 'Jyri' (spelling? - cannot remember his last name) and played him in the Masters. I believe he said he was from Helsinki and he must belong to a club somewhere as he didn't say anything about expensive table time.

There are a couple of clubs that I know of, but they're too far away. However, there is a gentlemen's club downtown with two snooker tables. Would be insanely cheap, but becoming a member is quite the process. Hopefully I can join in the fall.

Mrfault, where do you play with 20€/h price? I don't know any club that expensive.
Ritz has 14,50/h at prime time and that's highest price I know in Helsinki.
