  • Hi from Hamilton, Scotland

    Afternoon all!

Enjoyed watching snooker for a number of years now and finally decided to take up playing the game a couple of months ago. Thought it would be best to get lessons straight away to get the fundamentals right before starting. I've been getting lessons from Jim Donnelly in Glasgow and really starting to pick it up.

I'm from Hamilton in Lanarkshire (only recently moved there) and found Bar147 to practice in. My mates are not really into snooker so finding it difficult to get match practice locally. Anyone from the area and be interested in a few frames?

    Cheers

      Welcome Crawfty,
      Enjoy the forum.

I work just along the road from you in High Blantyre, but don't really play snooker ( pool for me ).

I know that doesn't help you much, LOL, but hope you find some practice partner in the area.

Why not ask in Bar147 if there are any competitions you can enter ? You'll find people of all

skill levels play in comps, so don't fear that you can't compete.

Probably easiest way to get practice as well , once your talking to other players in the comp.

      :snooker:

I've been into Bar147 a couple of times and the guy that serves isn't really too helpful if truth be told! (hope hes not on here somewhere ). Asked him about competitions and got a real blank stare haha! Will ask again when I'm next down, hopefully another member of staff is on!!

Cheers for the heads up tho! If I'm ever in at Carrigans in High Blantyre ill let you know and we get a few games of pool!!

Hello mate. Welcome to the Forum. I had a couple of lessons from Jim a few years back. Really helped me improve and Jim is a really nice bloke. If you're ever through Edinburgh drop into The Locarno snooker hall. Always someone there up for a few frames.

            Cheers mate!

Yeah Jim seems to know his stuff. I've had about 6 hours with him now and really loving it. He has got me shifting the cue ball around the table in ways I never thought possible! Just need to get into match practice now as practicing alone is good for certain aspects but nothing beats getting into a good game and learning from the mistakes in there.

Do you play to a good standard bigmeek?

Sad to say I'm not very good. Just love the game. Been playing the game since I was about 11/12 years old, that's over 50 years now, and my highest break is still only 44. Think if I'd taken lessons years ago I would have managed to do better. Reason I went to see Jim was because my game was at an all time low and I could hardly get a red and a black. Jim sorted out my cueing and gave me the basics of cue ball control using his "fan system". With a little bit of practice I was knocking in regular 20's and the odd 30+. Sadly a neck problem has curtailed my practice and I've not improved much since. Havn't given up hope of the magic 50 one day. I started playing in the Edinburgh league 4 years ago and that has improved my safety game.
Enjoy the Forum. Any questions just ask. Keep us informed of your progress.

Plenty of good players in bar 147 including Jamie Burnett, quite a few of their pool team play to a high standard of snooker.

I think a 48 but I was lucky. LOL. Some days I can get the odd 20s and 30s break.

I'm from Hamilton. I used to play in Bar147 but to be honest the £6 a hour put me right off. Way too expensive for me.
I now play in the Low Waters Miners Welfare Social Club which is £2 a hour and the beer is cheaper.

Yeah mate, I stay just at the top of low waters road and went to the miners a couple of times. Only problem I had was that they only have the 2 tables?? As soon as I started practice some guys came in and wanted my table! Felt pressured to get off so looked for somewhere with more tables so I could take my time. As I had just started playing I didn't fancy taking any of them on haha!

Do you play in the miners quite regular?
