Personally, I find that O'Sullivan smashing the reds open early and then just potting them, a tad boring at times. On the other hand, the old style break building, i.e. the Davis, Reardon, Spencer way, is to pick off reds, playing delightful little cannons, nudge outs, using side etc - that to me is far more enjoyable to watch. It may not be so effective as the modern day break building but in its own way, required a higher degree of skill.
I agree! Furthermore I enjoy safety play much more than potting, so I find O'Sullivan rather boring to watch.
Now I am waiting for negative rep from the O'Sullivan fans

        the joy of snooker

i can see TWO style of play fast and furious at one side and slow but sure at the other side..both are fun to watch especially when a master of the style get on the go and demonstrate how effective his way of play is.
and here we find TWO players at the top of each style .....Ronnie O'sullivan with his stunning fast finish making the game look so easy .
and John Higgins nowadays showing the magic of the ground and pound of the break building .
Dott is unique in his way for stopping fast and furious stylists such as ronnie

some how for me there is no boring player when they are at the top level of their form.

I had tickets for the semi finals of the uk championships a couple of years ago,I bought them before the tournament started, looking forward to a possible ronnie v hendry match but most of the seeded players got knocked out early that year and i ended up watching probably two of the most boring players of all time, it was David gray v joe perry. The match seemed to last ages and ages.Their was no fluency at all and lots of mistakes and safety play, I sat through every second of nine long frames of snooker. After over 5 hours i started to feel a bit dazed and i didn't seem to be completely aware of what was going on. This old woman sitting next to me was also starting to nod off,her head was drooping down and she would wake herself up and she was repeating this several times I then desperately got up off my seat and left the arena went to the bar and got drunk. The match finished hours later with gray winning 9-8.. yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats why Higgins only won the wc twice. If he would have been more positive, attacking he would have got at least 4 or 5 under his belt.

More attacking??..John IS one of the attacking players on the tour!! Maybe you haven't really watched his game..(joke!) Higgins, Hendry, O'Sullivan..and now maybe Smurph and Maguire...attacking players all of them, certainly not Ebdon-or Davis-like players!

I guess I have seen John play live around 25 times. For example, he is not eager to go early into the bunch. He prefers picking up the reds and going into the reds at the last minute. Which can be a bit awkward, being not perfect to go into them and having denied the earlier good position to go into the pack. I hope you still can follow what I am talking about!

From the past , i would say Neal Foulds... yawn yawn

I have got to say, snooker these days has lost the edge, gone are the days of the "edge of seat encounters" of Davis v Taylor Hendry v Davis and White v anyone ..lol

The game has gone very boring, no wonder the governing body are struggling for sponsors. The game needs a total revamp, suggestions are :

                      1) Change the governing body
                      2) Change the game somewhat, all shots have to be timed !
                      3) Make the pockets a touch tighter
                      4) Look at the rules of the game

Just clutching at straws, but i cant be alone here in my thoughts

                      Q
Looking for a uk, brand new car or van?, look no further, drop me an email or pager now, I will beat any dealer on the road price ! Q

So make the tables harder and put players under more pressure when on a shot?

I'm sure that'll speed the frames up....

They need pressure, they are playing an enjoyable game with the opportunity to earn big money. What we are forgetting here is the crowds are flocking away from the game, I was at the crucible for the quarter finals and there was at least 100 empty seats in my match and probably the same in the Stevens/Murphy Match.

It needs to be more exciting !!

Of course I follow you! And you not watching his game was as I said, A JOKE. John is not alone in this type of playing strategy though...Stephen Hendry is very similar among others...and I guess it pays off for both of them since Stephen now has over 700 centuries competitively and John over 350. Also, as you know John is among the few who has made 5 maximums competitively...so..as i said..it pays off to play the way he does...and I for one enjoy his way of playing and wouldn't consider it boring for the life of me..
