Cues and what you prefer or class as the best

I've had many cues......they all have their plus & minus points.
I've had a......
2pc Riley £20 Argos cue, terrible finish, joint has gone.....got insulating tape over it......still have
Nelson 1 piece, too light and whippy....had my highest break of 103 with this cue.....broke it by accident.
Aeon 2 piece, looked nice, rubbish to play....sold
Riley piece Graphite, "Don't even go there"! Still have
JP Champion 3/4.....lovely well made cue, too much forward weight when striking.....good resale value.
2 piece Ebony handspliced(can't remember make) snapped behind ferrule, had it fixed at Glovers.....weight balance changed, spoilt it....sold
Peradon Kingsley Kennersley 1pc match cue, good striker and good around black spot, poor for power shots...still have
1 pc E.J Riley old thick butt, ash shaft.....okay but nothing special.....still have
Mastercue Handspliced......only got today, i'll let you know in due course.....

I have found that all these cues served a purpose, no matter how short that may have been......apart from the Nelson that for some reason worked well(good form, youth etc), i'm still looking for that "Holy Grail Cue".....

With reference to the John Parris debate.....I've owned one, unfortunately I bought the wrong spec for me....lovelyest cue I've owned so far, i'd love another but the cost/waiting time seems to put them out of my reach atm.

A lot of folk on here have jealousy and an agenda against JP, it's sad, he's very respected in the game. The greatest ever uses a JP, and he's known as the fussiest player to hold a cue; Ronnie. Anyone who says they aren't he mustard is daft. Personally, I prefer my PP but that's because of it's unique butt, old wood (air dried for 24yrs before being cut) and feel. JP, CJ, RC, they all make great cues. If I was going to have a custom made, I'd give Jawes Cues a chance, Jim is out the blocks like Bolt. He seems willing to experiment and try different things. And he's the best value for money for a UK custom. Other than that Ton Praram III looks a good bet for a custom, from Thailand.

What I would like to advise is this. If you are a hundred breaker, the ultimate cue can make a difference to your game. If you're not, then it's merely a nice thing to own, nothing wrong with that. People on my cue challenge will benefit from a custom but those that criticise JPU generally don't have the skill to wield it or notice the difference. That's not meant to be a knock, it's a fact that increased cue feel will only come to those who have extra feel from their hands.

Each to their own, i see people own the club play with old varnished cues and play great with them conversely i see poople with the very best money can buy and can't string two or three balls together...it really is subjective.

Personally like the finish on Robert Osborne and Trevor White cues . Lucky enough to have had a few from each maker of the years . Playability wise , Trevor shades it . But mainly down to the response off the shaft on my latest cue .

Parris decent but finish not quite as good as the other 2 mentioned .

John Parris no longer makes cues so he can't really be compared. John Parris has become more of a brand than just a cue maker.

PMSL! Do you really think that Ronnie who tries out every tip and cue imaginable would put up with average if he could get another superior cue instead. Because let's face it, he can easily afford it and they'd make one pretty damn fast for him.

But no, he sticks to JP.

The greatest player of all time uses a JP, that's the only fact on this thread. In fact, the greatest players on the planet right now use JP, Ronnie, Trump, Robbo. The rest is subjective, as already said.

Sorry, here's another fact - JP cues have been used to compile more 147s in the game than any other cue brand.

I have only ever owned one JP Elite cue so I am unable to comment on anything else. I only heard of JP when a school friend who was a great snooker player got his JP. It looked amazing with its ash shaft and ebony butt. I then watched a young Ronnie win the UK with his Parris and had to get one. All the best players in my local club had one so I was hooked. I didn't know what to look for in a cue at that time except how it looked and that Ronnie had one so they must be good. after a couple of months I remember some people saying that my cue action and ability was getting better, but that's probably not down to the cue, I was spending every minute I could on the table at that point. Never the less, I was 16 and knocking in 50's and 60's with my new cue. I loved it. unfortunately I gave up playing snooker in my late teens when girls and nightclubs became my new addiction. The JP cue went in to storage and only came out now and then. I settled down and had children and it was only last year that now both my children started school full time that I decided to play a bit more snooker. I really got back in to it and loved the buzz I was getting from potting balls again. I said to my wife that if I can a century

carried on from previous post....

if I can make a century again I will order a new cue and start to play properly again. so I did and went off to order my cue from the maker of the cue that had served me well for 20 years on and off.

It was only after placing the order that I started hearing of other cue makers and maybe I should have looked in to them but felt that I could get everything I need from JP.

it will be next year sometime before I get my cue but will certainly post pictures.

I am not interested in changing your mind. You have your opinion, I have mine, both I suspect are based on solid personal experience with actual cues from the makers in question. I would just add one thing: do you really think Ronnie gets the same treatment and product as Joe Bloggs walking in off the street? He can cherry pick anything he wants, as can the other pros using JP cues. Of course they are happy with them and so they should be. JP needs to be judged on his total output, not just the pro work.

As I said in Previous post, JP makes cues for 75% of the top 32 players in the world. Speaks for itself really.

Got to say I have not seen a single "poor" Trevor White or Robin Cook but I have seen several poor JPs - but I have also seen several lovely JPs.
Not seen either an old or new Will Hunt but have heard that the new ones are pretty good cues (made in China under agreement for Will).
yep, you have hit the nail on the head there - with cues (and many things related to snooker ) it is always personal preference that matters and obviously will vary greatly from person to person :wink:
