Cues and what you prefer or class as the best

Never saw that post. The only pro I know who always has his back finger off the end of the cue is Mathew Stevens and I believe Mark Allen keeps his baby finger on top of the cue on a lot of shots. I teach bridge length between 9-12" and depending on the player's height and arm length and I also teach the bridge arm slightly bent.

However some good players have 13-14" of cue out there but I've never noticed any with less than 9" except when the two balls are close together. In the end it's all a matter of personal preference. A lot of players like the feel of the grip with the back finger off the end of the cue and even Steve Davis once commented that he liked that grip. One thing is does do is take the baby finger completely out of the picture which would help some players not to turn the cue (usually using the wrist joint). Joe Davis wasn't too tall and he had 4" of cue out the back even with his bridge arm ramrod straight.

It becomes a matter of personal choice and what feels good to the individual player and also the length of his preferred cue.

Trade-off is a longer bridge gives the player a longer sighting length and would normally help with longer pots. I've experimented a bit and at 6ft in height Ive found even at 10" I feel cramped so I prefer right around 12" but I don't dictate this to my students...each to his own.

On the JP Ultimate topic I thought JP took a larger deposit but I haven't checked his website. I have also heard an Ultimate 3/4-butt takes about 18 months and a 1pc takes 'up to' 2 years. Far to long for me to wait. And yes, MW does take 100% deposit, which I feel is a bit unfair as even if someone doesn't want the cue in the end he would have no trouble selling it as long as the specs were OK. Same with an Ultimate. If JP made an Ultimate and the buyer refused to pay for it and he posted it on here there would be a near riot to be first to get it if the price was his normal price.

Terry, didn't Ronnie experiment with pinkie off the cue in his younger days? I know he now says all fingers on the cue in his tv programme. Does he also relax the forefinger a fair bit and drives with the middle finger?

Why? I reduced down to 9" on the advice of a very good playing friend, to take up the 'compact' set-up. I'm done with that tbh, big power drop for me. My coach advised to lengthen a bit, maybe an inch or two. I've found it to be useful. When I started playing snooker, I'd be cueing at 12" and ended up at 9", so to be at 10.5" after some coaching is bang in the middle. Maybe Terry can comment on this aspect?

Ok Byrom, so the best cue you've ever had was a JPU. Good stuff. I think Pottr, a very good player on here also uses a JPU. And then all these pros including the best ever also use a JPU. I'm seeing a pattern here.................

When I started playing snooker, I'd be cueing at 12" and ended up at 9", so to be at 10.5" after some coaching is bang in the middle. Maybe Terry can comment on this aspect?

No, cueing at 10.5 in those as well. The stun shot off 5 cushions wouldn't have been possible at 9" bridge to ball, at least not on a cloth that slow.
