  • Back in the club

    Hi All,

Started playing snooker again at the start of this year after over 20 yrs not playing, was made redundant which gave me the time to practice and get back most of what I had.
Back in work now which could have caused me to drop things again but luckily a friend got me into a local League playing matches on Monday nights. Really enjoying it again!
I wanted a new cue, as never really had a decent one so joined the forum looked a loads of threads and found ADR147, who has lots of top quality cues.

Rayleigh Lanes where Mr Bingham practices. Also Benfleet Rileys. Had a cannon one piece of old, but bought a cheap Jian Ying cue when starting up again as I loved the attachments (being a short arze) Just bought a lovely 3/4 Thai made cue off ADR147 57in 18.4oz 9.5mm.

              New cue tip?

I see Selby looking off his game yesterday playing with a new tip. Is it wrong to sand a new tip down to the size you prefer immediately? I.e, I like a lower profile tip as oppose to a bulbous one, but can this kill the feel of the new tip filing it down too much too quick before it beds in properly? Cheers.

                ^very much my thinking
shape to liking and then let it bed in, then final reshape

but being Selby, in the middle of a competition I would think he may want the final shape that he is used to.
I know that he asked Dominic Dale to retip it for him (immediately after knocking DD out of the comp! )
The commentators have said that he has been practising with it a lot behind stage, so maybe there was time to allow for bedding in and a final reshape before his next match?

I would have thought that even if you file it to the right shape straight away the tip wouldn't play the same as it isn't as compact.

Looking at Selby's tip it is quite a bulbous tip so he has plenty to play with. His tip also is wider than the ferrule in parts so these would also not be as hard so it would be interesting how this would play if not played in.

I read in another thread, about a guy who used to re-tip all the cues in club asking only for a free pint or two. He would then re-tip them again a month or later and keep all the played in tips! Great idea. I hate that period from new tip to played in tip you are happy with so top way of cutting that down.

I re-tip a lot of cues and for some of the good players this was standard practice, don't see it too much nowadays for some reason.

A county player I know plays them in and then cuts them off with a razor blade and leaves a couple in his case for emergencies.

I think it's a good idea for the softer tips that then have to get a little harder to be right; obviously lots of laminates can pretty much play in from the off.

John Parrott said in one pundit moment a few years ago (WSC) that he would take tips off a rack cue in his local club, as they would be bedded in, he never said he replaced any though tut, tut

I noticed that our rack cues were looking a bit ropey around 3 years ago and some of them didn't have a tip. Being a person who always wants to promote snooker and keep the game going I did around a dozen of them and put Elks on, shaped them, cleaned the ferules and also did a few of the members cues at the same time as they saw me doing it.

I paid for the tips for the club cues and I also game them a clean and oiled a couple; all the cues were old club cues bought in the eighties and tipped around 6 or 7 years ago by the old Captain.

I was told the other day that apparently someone had seen me doing all the cues and had said that the old tips are worth a lot of money and he's replacing them with cheap ones, you don't think he's doing it for our benefit, he's obviously on the make!

I still can't find out who it is but it really makes you shake your head!

Jeez, there's no helping some people. My club charge £3.50 for a re-tip so you were doing them a favour. But of a snooker cliche really, everyone is dodgy and on the make...

                              "worth a lot of money"?
as you say = shake of head

                              typical bar-talk of an "expert"

At my social club they had the snooker room redecorated and at that time asked all members to claim their cues/cases and any left over would be auctioned for funds to the club. So I popped down before the auction to see what was around, they was only one cue that was anything "ok", a Cue Craft 2pc.
                              oh, they were all 2pc
all the other cues was a painted/transfer butt type
and all were in terrible state, bashed and dented

anyway, this chap "from the bar" was putting starting prices on them, £40, 50, 60 - the Cue Craft (which was also bashed up) he put £100
I wished them luck and went home
