  • Hi from burton and district snooker league

Hi I have just joined and wanted to say hi to everyone. I have recently started my first year in the burton and district snooker league and am really enjoying it. Division 1 not premier (not that good. Yet) I wondered if people have any advise on tips. I have always used elk master which I do prefer but always seem to find that they take a lot of time to bed in and feel like a sponge one the end and make a dull sound. I have heard al sorts of things like put them in a vice over night to compact them before putting them on or sand them down by half before putting them on.
I would like to hear what you guys think would be for the best.
    Regards

Hi Tewky and welcome to TSF.

Does Fletch still play in that league? I would try the Kamui black's if you don't like to have to bed in tips. These are the best tips around Imo. There are NO substitutes. You maybe quite surprised.

Hi Tewky, welcome to the forum mate.

If you use the search block at the top you will find lots of information on tips and how to play about with them.

Personally I use a Talisman Soft larger than the ferrule diameter and then shape down. I have has the odd one delaminate but it's rare. I take the tip down to half the height straight away and then shape as I personally think it plays how I like it from there on in; as for feel, I like them but if you've been using an Elk they will initially feel clunky as a lot of laminates do (in my opinion).

If you like the feel of an Elk (as most do) and want to stick to them then I guess you are still addressing the compression issue, hence you mention a vice.

I did 3 types of compression recently with Elks and measures them so you can replicate them for next time when you find the compression rate you prefer; you can see what I did here if it still interests you to do it this way. Click here

I used to watch some good players just continually tapping their new tips against a wall for a week or so to speed the process up but I would have thought compressing it would be easier once you can replicate your desired process.

Everyone will give you advice of their preferred tip and we are all different so I guess you need to find what's best for you and your game and stick with it or you'll always be fiddling!

I've also heard good things about Kamui blacks if you don;t like to bed a tip in, grip nice as do Talismans.

Hi thank you for both your replies.

I have only ever used elk master which is why I prefer them as have nothing to compare them against. I think I will definitely try one of the others I prefer a harder tip so I think the kamui black might be the option to try.

As regards to fletch I am unsure if he still plays as its my first season and haven't played everyone yet. If you know what team he plays for I could defiantly find out for you.

        Thanks again

Buffalo diamond pro is basically a hard Elk, also worth a try.
