  • Searching for a great cue

I've been wanting to buy a good cue in the 500-800 quid range. I tried a John Parris cue in Germany but didn't care much for the stroke. Recently, I heard some buzz on Facebook about a brand from Thailand called Maximus. Their cues were highly recommended and very reasonably priced at about $300 for a custom cue with all the extensions, case and shipping. What are your thoughts on this brand?

Here's what I want to buy:

    19 oz
    9.25 mm tip
3/4 butt tapered down to 28 mm
    58" length

I need a thin heavier cue because I enjoyed playing with one a long time back and also the tables I play on these days are slow.

    Hi ,
    Welcome to TSF,

Maximus are Great players !! As long as you can find one which suits your game , that would be okey.

Please try to contact Green baize .
I think you get the cue you are looking for , as well as sum good advice ( in case u need it ).
For that kind of budget , ADR would be also a good option to contact with.
You can send him a mail .

I hope this is okey .
Any question ? Feel free to ask .

Goodluck with your searche for a Holy Grail .

PS : this depends on your location of crs . if you can buy directly from Maximus (without paying import costs and Tax ). You may be able to pull off the deal abit cheaper !!

          Changed your tune there Ramon.

Maximus cues are great cues in the hands of a great player, in my hands it would be an ordinary cue.

            Same here. wise words.

TBH, I've seen about 20 of them and got the chance to try them. including my brother's. He bought 2 or 3 maximus from green baize.
One of the stiffest wood I've ever seen. They have an solid hit ( in general ). Do'nt know what kind of wood those guys are using .
Diff players , diff tastes of crs. But imo, they are good hitters.

If the OP wants a cue with a nice stroke, he should go for a one-piece, not a 3/4. For plenty of feel, he should opt for the very rare angel ash, air-dried to perfection. However, angel ash at 19oz; hens' teeth. Think he'll have to stick to lump wood.

Definitely favour a one piece if I were parting with that cash...

That will get you pretty much any high end cue if you're not too fussed on decoration. I'd say go for a Trevor White cue, I bought them all and I was most satisfied with my cue.

hahahaha, two year wait but even trev himself doesn't now how long it will take. Zero communication from Trev (is he still alive?) and a cue that can be made just as well by Maximus, TP, Adam, etc, etc. SWERVE!

If the OP wants a label and wants to spend large, then Stamford is the choice, as Selby and Ding have found. But I'd go Maximus or TP.

                    Searching for a great cue

Was just my two cents... can take my advice or leave it.

                    it's his money.

just consider this to be a second opinion from a complete stranger online

I think they have really good quality ash from Thailand. My cue is a maximus and my last one was also, the maximus ultimate is guaranteed to be a top quality piece of wood. I've never played with a cue that feels better.

Have you ever owned , played with or seen a Stamford cue Splash ? I've only seen one and thought it was a decent cue , but i couldn't recommend them as i haven't enough experience of them .

I really like the Maximus cues that i've seen and played with , excellent value for the money .

But i would recommend TW all the time , and you don't have to wait 2 years . There are dealers and Websites that have them available all the time , and they don't cost the earth .
Still trying to pot as many balls as i can !

Thanks for the advice everyone. I don't necessarily want to spend large but I assumed I'd have to for quality. Anyway I've decided on a Maximum Ultimate. Just emailed and asked them if they make one piece cues. I'm getting the cue, 4 extensions and the case for under $350 USD so that's way under budget and hopefully the cue will work well for me although it is scary trying to buy a cue online without trying it out. Unfortunately there are no snooker tables (or players) in my area so I only get to play when I visit my home in India for six weeks every year.

Another thing that surprised me....I recently noticed while watching the pros is that many of their cues are only shoulder height. I'm only 5'6 but I think I'll need a 57" cue which should be right around my chin area in height. I always thought a cue should reach your moustache but the pro's seem to be doing fine with shorter cues. I even noticed Ronnie holding his cus right at the end while playing basic shots (no overreaching).

Another question. What are your thoughts on tip brands like Kamui? All I've ever played with was Blue Diamond and Elk Master so I've never heard of this brand but then again I don't play as competitively as I used to 15 years back.

Try the TSF cues this website does - standard is very very high.
