          Joel:

Jian Ying cues on ebay; probably the best value cues that exist. Grand Cues are a bit more money but a jump in quality as well.

Cue Craft, Master cue, good cues for the money, especially if you can try some out in a shop.

Adam Cues, Jim, Andy Travis on here; nice custom cues, great value and finish. J6 cues are good players if he can get the weight correct.

Maximus Ultimate, Ton Praram III Beyond cue, the highest quality from the well known labels.

Parris, MW; expensive for what they are, either long waits or rip off prices or both. Trevor White; great cue, you'll wait forever and hear nothing. Swerve all these suppliers.

Angel 'air-dried' ash cues; probably the best ash cues ever made; rare as hens' teeth.

Ye Olde Ash cues: air-dried after being rescued from sunken ship (the ship made out of air-dried ash to begin with): superb. Highly expensive and rare.

Aurora 'bog maple' cues made from trees sunk in the great lakes and rescued. Probably the finest maple cue ever made bar none. Availabiliity, almost zero.

Please don't confuse newbies in this manner.

YOA - 1st issue - I have references of this wood being sourced by B&W in the early 20s from RN shipyard, that it could have been used in a ship or unused but no reference to being from a sunken ship. Can you point me to this reference please?
            cheers

A lack of knowledge is definitely issue A. It's so well known that the ship sank before the timber was raised and stacked in Newcastle.

Cheers everyone for the welcome. As for a cue I have been online and had a look at all sorts of cues but I don't think there is any substitute for going to a shop and holding a few before purchasing, hopefully I will be doing this tomorrow. I have been looking at hand made cues and have even thought of a made to order one as I am particularly tall with a disproportionately long upper body I could do with a cue about 62 inches or permanently use a small extension. I am not in a position to spend a fortune as I am just not good enough to justify it, well not yet, I think being out of practice and a poor fitting cue don't help. Anyway Thanks everyone it's nice To see your a friendly bunch

Be careful with custom cues; no two cues are the same. They can come out perfect or feel exactly wrong; about 1 in 4 come out great, 2 in 4 are ok and 1 in 4 are dreadful on average; the reason so many custom cues end up on ebay etc or being sold on in clubs. I'd always go for a shop and cues to try if on a limited budget; there's more chance of getting the best cue for you for your money.

I saw someone in a previous post that it COULD have been from a sunken ship but no one else had a reference to that but have seen you type this a coupe of times since.
The reference of the Newcastle RN shipyard is known yes but also does not state from a sunken ship, it could have been new stock that was never used or that it was removed from a ship (not sunk) and stockpiled, there is one reference to a RN Battleship.

so much for your lack of knowledge line

"so well known" I ask as well, and again, where is this reference - please.

Whereabouts are you located? We may be able to point you to a good shop, as you say, nothing beats holding and testing a cue before buying

Sorry I should have said, I live in County Durham just outside Durham it's self, I am off to have a look at a company called green baize Ltd over Stockton way tomorrow. I think for the time being I will try and keep the price under £150 if I can

To be honest that's my worry buying something that just isn't right for me. I am off to green baize Ltd tomorrow all being well, they have a decent selection of cues so I will see what they have for under £150 and see how I get on. Thanks again
