  • Hi from Aberdeen

    Hi all,

Been a snooker fan for ages, but mainly play pool in my free time (not good enough at snooker yet to play competitively!). I'm a Class 3 snooker referee (qualified in England) looking to referee next season in Scotland.

    Cheers!
    James

Welcome to the Forum. Always questions coming up on here which require a referee to answer. Free balls, miss rule etc etc. Feel free to chip in with your opinions. Don't be shy. What did you think of the Selby roll up to the black? Hit or a miss? Did Jan handle it ok?

Yea I had a look though previous posts and there does seem to be a few referee questions, so always happy to chip in.

Jan handled it well in my opinion, and I agree with him that it was a miss. I think what a lot of people don't get (and therefore like being referees sitting on their sofa) is that Jan has one shot at viewing a call and making a quick decision. He doesn't (rightly or wrongly) have the option for another look. Even when the Paul took a look at a number of camera views it wasn't clear cut. Glad he stuck to his guns and called it a foul. Last thing you want to do as a ref is change your mind due to pressure from others. You want to be certain of the call.

Will dig through the posts here some more though and see what others think. Been a very interesting scenario though. Definitely not as clear cut as others (eg Ronnie's chalk incident..)

          Cheers for the welcome.

Haven't found a snooker hall as of yet. I'm likely to join the Riley's pool team so may end up using those snooker tables now and then, but would like to join another club. Got any recommendations?

Unfortunately there is only Riley's as a dedicated snooker club, Marc Davis practices there and the cloths are quite nice, but it's still Riley's. There's a few working mens clubs with tables, check the Aberdeen snooker league website to tell you where they are. I think the sportsman club on Queens road has 3 tables, if it's still open.

Yea I thought that would be the case. Ah, ok. I'll take a look. Riley's would most lilkely be my option to begin with at least. Cheers.
