An activity providing entertainment or amusement; a pastime: party games; word games.

      GAMES:-

A competitive activity or sport in which players contend with each other according to a set of rules: the game of basketball; the game of gin rummy.
A single instance of such an activity: We lost the first game.
GAMES: An organized athletic program or contest: track-and-field games; took part in the winter games. [like the Olympics]
A period of competition or challenge: It was too late in the game to change the schedule of the project.

The total number of points required to win a game: One hundred points is game in bridge.
The score accumulated at any given time in a game: The game is now 14 to 12.
The equipment needed for playing certain games: packed the children's games in the car.
A particular style or manner of playing a game: improved my tennis game with practice.
(There are more meanings to "game" but they are not relevant)
So by this definition snooker is a game, because I distinctly remember Bingham being 14-12 up at one stage against Murphy during the WC final in 2015 ....

Yes indeed, I don't know why the word "game" was brought into the conversation!

Or the Olympic games? Don't really need to be physically fit for that do you? LOL!

My point would be , What does it matter? It certainly doesn't make it a lesser event or lesser skilled discipline either way.

Irrespective of the 'sport versus game' debate (clearly snooker IS a sport), spectators wearing football attire should be refused entry.

Whatever next, lager swigging and pork pie eating whilst in the auditorium watching a match?!...
            Highest break - 145
            Playing cue - an old antique Burroughs & Watts 'London Soho Square' 1 piece maple - 58" / 16.5oz / with a 10mm tip

            "Fantabulous!"...

When I try playing it looks more like a game than a sport ....

What criteria did you use to arrive at this conclusion ?

oops look like i kicked off here the old debate sport or game. lol
it makes absolutely no difference however for those of us that like to speak and understand English. Snooker is a game and should never be called a sport.
last time i looked on about 10 dictionaries i found only one that did not quote the words " physical prowess". Surely that can be taken as a bit more than walking round a table, bending and lifting a 18 oz or so stick? To me physical prowess means, one who most likely through training has an above normal physical attribute or attributes and puts those attributes to work in his field. Now despite the BBC calling it a sport, despite their being one sporting body in America stupid enough to include chess as a sport the reality is broadcasters, players and organisations will say and do anything for money. The Beeb for instance said Jimmy Saville was a nice bloke. And the sporting organisations perticulary in America have included certain games as sports in their definitions merely because they were threatened with court action when it came to them refusing financial backing.

I mean c'mon guys who amongst you is saft enough to call Bill Werbunick a sportsman?

Is boxing a sport? If so, Two Ton Tony Galento, Butterbean, Big Gabe Brown and James Toney would compete with Big Bill in terms of weight and physical condition.

Gav -the point I wanted to make, if you look at available definitions online regarding the difference between what defines sport or a game, that hold credible data from important sources, there really is no tangible difference except maybe physical prowess which I would happily argue is present during snookers greatest contest the world championship. Be it a game or sport there is no lesser connotation from that point......? Therefore snooker holds the upmost esteem regardless of this category.

Strangely enough i would put pool down as a sport. Well word rules pool , it does take physical prowess and exhertion at least on the break.

Edit.. There again maybe not as it is not a necessity.

"A man who takes part in a sport, especially as a professional".
                              "A person who behaves sportingly".
The above quotes are taken from the Oxford English Dictionary as definitions of the word sportsman.
So it is not just the activity in which one is engaged, but also that it is done in a fair & honest manner, E.G. when a player calls a foul on himself.
Regardless of whether you call it sport or game it is also about integrity.
