  • Hello

    Hi, everyone.

I've played for approximately 35 years, but there was a long period where I didn't have access to any snooker and I developed many bad habits playing pool. I'm only lately getting back to where I was at my peak. At my peak I was about a 40 average break player (70 max break), but the knowledge I have gained over the years has me thinking I will soon be better than I ever was.

    Best wishes for the holidays.

Don't think of making "numbers" .when you practise concentrate on you positional shots. Learn from each shot you attempted when you miss, don't be disappointed with the miss itself. If you feel you miss to much after this, practise corner to corner straight blues - expect to pot 2 out of 5 at least with the misses being close otherwise may be worth a lesson to improve straight cueing. Not many people pot 5 out of 5 straight blues so a solid test of cueing and indication of where your fundamentals are.

No point blaming the paintwork when your engine is faulty.

      Lighten up Francis.

I was just trying to provide some idea of where I stand in terms of ability and how I arrived there. This is just an introduction, not a discussion about technique. Anyway, hi to you too.

Further to the above, at over 50, and after a long time off the table, I know my mechanics need work, to get nice and smooth and build consistency. I'm comfortable with my progression since I don't have enough time to practice as much as I really need.

Question - who is Francis and why do they need to lighten up?
The reply was perfectly polite and from someone giving good advise to help you get to where you want to be.

          Enjoy
          Merry crimbo!

I disagree with the bold text. This thread is an introduction, and it's in the introductions section. I'm sure there's an appropriate section for requesting/providing advice. I don't think ignoring the thread topic and launching into a screed is the best way to welcome someone to your forum.
See below for the lighten up reference.

I see the reply as entirely appropriate in response to what you wrote and a possible course of action for you to try; also I don't read the reply as a screed at all.
This is the problem with modern social-media typing only, we are visual and auditory animals, and when we don't have those references it is difficult to comprehend the other person's attitude and inference and take umbrage when there was none meant.

Anyway, you read "potato", I read "poetaato"

Welcome to TSF and I hope your games comes on leaps and bounds

Potato, 'potahto'; Tomato, 'tomahto' ...let's call the whole thing off

Rebound59 - sticking to playing pool could be an option?
                Highest break - 145

Yes, you are right. Sorry I should of said hello first and welcome , I'm a bit autistic in that respect sometimes. Generally I'm one of less sensible members on here who probably jokes too much but on this occasion when reading your post I thought immediately "hope this bloke doesn't make the same mistake as me" I didn't play for 20yrs and when I came back I "thought of the numbers" (I used to make!) Lol.

                  Anyways welcome! ; )

Alright, agree to disagree on this one. I just think in the case where a discussion forum has plenty of sub-forums for discussing specific topics, e.g. advice on play, new member introductions, etc, that it's fair to expect respondents to respect the topic. I wouldn't go into a thread you made on cues and post a big piece one the best chalk. I don't see this as any different.

Thanks. I appreciate that. And I agree with the sentiment. There was nothing wrong with your advice.

For sure, consistency is the goal. Thinking about this or that failed run isn't going to help. I know my aim is true and I can make any ball on the table... sometimes. It's delivering the cue well on each and every shot that needs work.

Brilliant advice... Players of all standards should take heed.

Just stay at the table and if you stay at the table long enough you'll rack up points as a consequence.
