  • tracing my grandfather

during a recent family get together i was told that my grandfather (Robert Rankine) from glasgow scotland was the Scottish champion in the 1920,s.

    a) i have no idea if it was for snooker/pool or billiards.
    b) i dont know if this story is true

but i remember my father told me thet his dad was a bit of a snooker shark and made his holiday money that way :-~

this was also collaborated by one of my uncles.

i have tried other sources to try to trace tis story and was sent the address to this forum.it would be interesting to know if this is the case as i know very little about my grandfather ..thankyou

I imagine it will take a pretty large piece of paper, several pieces of charcoal and lot of patience.

    Best of luck

dont know the name but you may want to call up a couple of the main clubs in glasgow and ask if they can put a notice up, explaining, and leave your number with staff.

I have no record of Robert Rankine being a national champion of either billiards or snooker in Scotland, although, as an amateur, there would have been plenty of other local competitions which would allow him a claim to that title. His name doesn't appear in any capacity in the specialist English press, but you could try a search on The Scotsman archive.

I have found this website useful, but you need to know where you are looking because the underlying OCR is very poor and it is likely that multiple variations of a search will be needed to extract the required information. This problem, coupled with the difficulty in reading an entire issue, make the process a bit tortuous.

          Best of luck
