  • Hello from California

Hi everyone, I'm Chris, a burgeoning snooker fanatic from the other side of the pond Now, the United States is definitely a desert as far as the sport is concerned, but the internet has opened up my interest in a hurry.

I've had a few snooker video games on my PC before, so I learned the rules and concepts that way, but didn't dig into the real-world scene until a month or two ago. Thanks to youtube, and the generosity of snooker fans everywhere in finding live streams and making sure clips are available for viewing, I'm fast becoming addicted to Britain's top cue discipline. (I can't count how many times I've seen the Davis/Taylor 1985 final again and again... )

In Sacramento, where I live (the capital of the state of California), there are quite a few billiards halls, but none offer snooker balls for play, given the game's extreme obscurity on this continent. As a result, I plan to procure my own set soon, so my friends and I can enjoy the game Probably a set off the internet though for $53 via amazon.com, though, as the set I saw at Capitol Billiards in the north part of town approached triple-digits in price.

In lieu of my own set, I and one of my friends have used regular pool balls in a snooker set up, essentially "nine reds," where I have yet to win a game, and we have scored more foul points than high breaks. But playing the game, as well as watching it, makes me appreciate the rhythm and length that snooker frames offer, in comparison to other billiard table games.

I wonder how many other Americans watch the sport, I'd love to see it televised out here someday.

            Thanks everyone

Over the weekend my friends and I did a little more improvised snooker with the 8-ball rack (using the stripes, red, and purple as "reds")...our skills are clearly not on par with the pros and the highest break I can recall was an 11 or so. We had so much fun that I've ordered a set of Aramith snooker balls off of Ebay (in 2" 1/4th inch size to be used at the pool tables at the local halls out here) and can't wait for it to arrive.

You must try it on a full size table one day, totally different. Only then will you really apprecieate how difficult it is. Playing engish 8 ball for instance only raises a grin when I clear all 8 balls yet if i ever get to make break of 50 at snooker I'm throwing a party.

Mebbe the American snooker association can tell you where the nearest table to you is. Google them they have a site out there somewhere.

Hey, if me and my friends average about 1 point a break on pool tables...

SnookerUSA.com notes that the US snooker championship will be held in San Gabriel (a suburb of Los Angeles), but that's a full 425 miles from Sacramento, so not exactly nearby. (I do have friends in Southern California so someday I might have to hit that up between visiting them and going to Disneyland.)

Out here, I've only found ONE billiard equipment store that has snooker balls in stock, and while it's an Aramith set, they're the ones with numbers on the colors and orange subbing for pink. (Those balls are also more expensive - at $200 - than anything I can get online!) None of the pool halls I've been to in this region have snooker balls, let alone snooker tables; the aforementioned billiard equipment store with the snooker balls did have a few snooker cues available for $50 each.

In short, my burgeoning interest is something I'm pursuing on my own in this area at the start. I don't have the space for a full sized snooker table at my current place...maybe some time down the road I can procure one, along with a set of 2 1/8th inch balls for it.

welcome buddy, even though i'm kind of new here too
seems to me that i'm a little bit luckier than you, because i've seen few snooker tables here in NYC with fewer people actually playing with them. same as you, thank the internet, especially the youtube, fans from different part of the world have uploaded tons of great videos about the snooker, and because of that, i've just ordered a custom cue from Trevor White, gotta wait for apprx 10 weeks to get it, and already started missing my new "baby" now..good luck to you and your friends Chris

Hey, welcome to you as well, thank you Nice to see that we're not the only others "across the pond" who've fallen in love with the beautiful sport.

I've actually been sending off the Youtube link to the clip of the final balls of the 1985 World Championship to quite a few folks, most of who perk up at Dennis Taylor's loopy glasses I liken that to my favorite auto racing moment ever, Gordon Johncock's win by a fraction of a second over Rick Mears three years earlier at the Indy 500...a situation where the crafty old fox gets his moment in the sunshine amidst the decade-long dominance of the young gun.

How did you discover snooker in NYC in any case?

I'm curious: in NYC, how hard is it to acquire a snooker cue?

Capitol Billiard in north Sacramento has a few, but I don't think any of those are British imports, some of them don't even have the flat spade! Cheapest snooker cues there are $50, but they can go up in price considerably from that. Not sure if any of those are quality.
