Hi everyone, I'm Chris, a burgeoning snooker fanatic from the other side of the pond Now, the United States is definitely a desert as far as the sport is concerned, but the internet has opened up my interest in a hurry.
I've had a few snooker video games on my PC before, so I learned the rules and concepts that way, but didn't dig into the real-world scene until a month or two ago. Thanks to youtube, and the generosity of snooker fans everywhere in finding live streams and making sure clips are available for viewing, I'm fast becoming addicted to Britain's top cue discipline. (I can't count how many times I've seen the Davis/Taylor 1985 final again and again... )
In Sacramento, where I live (the capital of the state of California), there are quite a few billiards halls, but none offer snooker balls for play, given the game's extreme obscurity on this continent. As a result, I plan to procure my own set soon, so my friends and I can enjoy the game Probably a set off the internet though for $53 via amazon.com, though, as the set I saw at Capitol Billiards in the north part of town approached triple-digits in price.
In lieu of my own set, I and one of my friends have used regular pool balls in a snooker set up, essentially "nine reds," where I have yet to win a game, and we have scored more foul points than high breaks. But playing the game, as well as watching it, makes me appreciate the rhythm and length that snooker frames offer, in comparison to other billiard table games.
I wonder how many other Americans watch the sport, I'd love to see it televised out here someday.
