Hello!
Im 31 and have good memories of watching the likes of Steve Davis, Jimmy White and Ronnie O'Sullivan. Mark Williams is another favourite of mine. What happened to him?
A competetive brother, meant I was always interested in snooker, but never interested enough because he kept beating me.
When I was in college about 10 years ago though, I bought a cue. I havent done anything much over the last eight years, but Im trying to get back into it with a good friend where we share a mutual interest. Im hoping to improve, but things are hard going. We're both terrible, but he's more terrible than me. But he is getting better.
My highest break is 9. My usual frame score is around 40.
I figured that I may as well sort out any external factors. So I've changed my moth eaten 10 year old cue for something a bit more upto date. I now have a nice looking Riley TB9 for £50. First frame I played, I got to 60! Then it all went down from there.
I presume snooker is a mental game as much as anything?
I certainly find Im a lot better when I don't care so much. But I end up lacking a bit of confidence, gettting tense and nervous and then overcorrecting. Or I get to thinking Im overcorrecting and end up undercorrecting.
It frustrates me at times. I fail at close range shots, but sometimes I get a sixth sense and without any thought I just stick my had down and bury a long red on a difficult angle.
It makes me wonder if I have a little talent there. Perhaps Im just thinking too much.
Im doing it for fun, but I'd like to be a bit more consistent.
If the cue ball is up the top end of the table, and a red a couple of inches away, I can most of the time, pot that into a bottom corner pocket. But then I suffer when the white is a large distance away from the object ball.
I figure I must have a bit of an issue with lining the shot up. I start trying to draw lines in my head, but they all start going squiggly and off course, then I can't see the end of the table.
Then I begin to wonder if it's just a crabby table when the ball seems to veer off into the corner. Then I start worrying about the tip that isn't evenly rounded.
Then I wonder if Im just rubbish.
Any tips for a budding beginner?
Thanks
Simon
