  • Referendum: Grand Prix round robin

    As we now know, the first round at Aberdeen will consist of eight groups of 6 players, best-of-5.

    I am thinking that it is therefore perhaps a bit much giving 2 points for correct winner/scoreline, and 1 point for correct winner.

    Therefore, what do we think? It appears the following are options, bearing in mind that there are actually going to be 120 matches in this round alone!!!!!

    1) Keep with the current system;

    2) Just one point for the correct winner of each match, regardless of whether the scoreline is correct;

    3) 1 point for correct winner and 1½ points for correct winner and scoreline

    3½) What do we think about having a bonus point for predicting the winner of each group, as well as the overall highest break?

    This does have ramifications for the Handicap competition, which could have these matches weighted slightly if a different scoring system were used (this is a lot of matches to be excluded from the competition).

    I think I am siding with just leaving the current sustem of 2 points or 1 point, which does keep things simple. The fact that higher scores will probably be achievable is, after all, the same for everyone!

    I am also thinking that in view of the number of matches, the quota for inclusion in the Handicap Contest (currently 40 matches) should be upped somewhat.

    Let me know your thoughts on THIS thread. A decision will be taken before the results of the previous round (and therefore the final fixture list) are known.

    I think we should just stick with the current system. Why treat it differently just because it is a best-of-5? A best-of-9 first round match and a best-of-19 final are rated identically, why make an exception with best-of-five? IMHO, just keep it simple .

      I like option 2 and 3 1/2.
      A win in a 'best of five' seems to depend so much more on luck, and as to the scoreline, only three possibilities to choose from. I feel, that shouldn't have the same weight as getting the right scoreline in a best of 9 (or even higher) match.
      option 3 1/2 though would give the possibility of gaining at least one bonus point per group, which seems to be fair.

        I'd go for current system (1 pt for winner, 2 pt's for winner/correct score, 1 pt for round HB). Also like suggestion of extra point for correct group winner.

        More points available, the better. I've a lot of catching up to do

            The Handicap Contest is a separate Contest which will be running throughout the season, current standings available here http://www.thesnookerforum.com/showthread-t_1775.html, which divides your score by the number of matches you have predicted on.

            More details will be found in the Rules, rule no.15 http://www.thesnookerforum.com/showthread-t_1084.html.

                      Because of all those matches in the grand prix, this tournament has a too big impact on the overall scoreline. To gain much more points in this tournament, than, lets say The UK or Worlds seems not right. Its for all contenders the same thing, but it gives The Grand Prix a greater status than The worldchampionship on our prediction quiz. Nobodies fault here of course. Maybe there could be a ranking point system in our predictions analog to the ranking point system for the tournaments. This would give credit to the status of each tournament. It would make things complicated, therefore I leave it to your decision.

                        The predictions could start at the last 16 stage rather than the round robin stage

                          Or instead of predicting the matches you could predict the final table of each group

                            Good suggestion, I agree on this one.
