No surprises tonight then, and a nice midnight finish.
I kind of expected Maguire to fall apart at 3-3 when he had that angry reaction, but good to see him raising his game in such a situation for once. Should be a good day tomorrow.
2018 Gibraltar Open: Cao, Walker, Donaldson, Day
?
That's the one I found as well, and before that you have the 2017 Riga Masters.
I think the last time it happened in anything you could realistically call a major event was the 2013 World Open, with Allen, Stevens, Higgins and Robertson.
...I thought it was quite remarkable that there was an englishman, a scotsman, a welshman and a northern irishman playing yesternight... a strictly "home nations" party
I don't really know what to expect from Ding and Yan... They've only played once before, in a Chinese PTC event when Yan was only 13, so there is almost no history there. Obviously all the experience is with Ding. He has a strong record at the business end of major events, and he has probably scored better than anyone this week. He just looks like someone who is not going to let this opportunity slip away, after such a long period of not winning anything. Yan, on the other hand, beat Higgins yesterday with a highest break of 43, so it's difficult to see him matching Ding today. It shows that his safety game is in good shape at the moment though. If he can combine it with the kind of potting he showed against Robertson, he can make it close. Ding to win 6-3.
There is actually not that much history between Allen and Maguire either. Their QF match in this event last year is probably the biggest match they've ever played against one another, and they've never met this late in a ranking event before. What's interesting though is that Allen has won every time they've met outside of the short format so far. Tough one to call... I think Allen is the better player at this point in time and much more used to winning this type of matches, but Maguire has scored the heavier of the two this week. If Maguire plays the way he did towards the end of his match against Stevens, I would make him favourite. I'm not sure he will though, he is too inconsistent from one day to another. Allen to win 6-5.
I wish they would just schedule these matches at 13:15 instead of 13:00, it would stop me wasting 15 minutes of my life every time I am optimistic (or stupid) enough to start watching at the scheduled time.
22 minutes. 22! Imagine wanting to watch a Champions League football match, turning up on time, then having to wait 20 minutes for the redundant studio analysis to finish. Unheard of.
