    • Jan Verhaas has started to look a lot like Jean Luc Picard recently...

Would be interesting to see if Ronnie can get past Selby's tactical game. He is not playing a lot of safety in this tourney.

          • Well, that was pretty nervy stuff tonight. Williams back to the kind of form we saw from him in the rest of the season, and O'Sullivan frustrated with himself that he wasn't able to get anything going, despite Studd's idiotic commentary that he looked "ice cool" tonight.

Honestly, it will be really tough for O'Sullivan to get past Selby in this form. Williams usually plays right into his hands, while Selby does the opposite, and I just can't see O'Sullivan winning that match if he is missing the kind of balls he was missing here. Needs to find something, otherwise it could be really one sided.

Yes it will, but I fancy ROS over Selby atm, his confidence is higher and that might be the telling difference this time.

Yes. If Selby decides to grind it, there is no way ROS is coming out of it.

                • That was a rather bizarre compliment Ronnie paid to Ally Carter in his post match interview. "If I played anyone like Ally Carter or above and they played well they'd probably take me."
"Kryten, isn't it round about this time of year that your head goes back to the lab for retuning?"

Really, was he that bad? I couldn't watch most of it today unfortunately.

                    • Mark Williams has really grown on me over the last few years and hope he joins the presenting/commentary mob when he retires. Getting on the BBC payroll is probably a nice little earner.

                      • I know Ronnie was being tongue in cheek but when he said people should bet on Selby could he have broken any rules? A comment like that could come back to haunt a player if they lose.

Pretty bad, yes. Missed some sitters and found some weird ways to lose frames from in front. He also enjoyed a couple of pivotal flukes towards the end, and he was left nicely among the balls quite a few times from Williams' misses, so he didn't need to fight that hard to get chances.

Personally, I think Selby's good form was overstated by the likes of Dale in commentary, but if the match turns into a giant grind with both players struggling, there is surely only one possible winner.

                            • It's funny, I'm just looking at the stats now, and O'Sullivan actually made five centuries in this match. Just goes to show how much the game has changed in terms of scoring, because that used to be a big deal in the past, even from the very top players, but now we see players doing that all the time even when I personally think they are not playing that well. Of course it's also a testament to O'Sullivan's scoring prowess that he is still making the big breaks even with all the nerves and the frustration.
