whats appealing about gould playing someone who has never won a frame in pro snooker

      • I guess because he is a higher ranked player compared to Baird and Mertens.

          • I agree Amine hasn't done a great deal. Also, Mertens v Baird would be a better match to watch.

they should just ask viewers to vote on the choice of match , or just go with obvious choices , what are they trying to prove as people can watch players like amiri on youtube anyway .

              • Yes. Maybe someone here could enlighten us what the criteria is behind choosing which matches would be on tv.

                  • Well at least we have Ken Doherty V Fraser Patrick tonight which will be nice, probably showing Ken's match because he's a former World Champion, but I have always liked to watch Ken play he seams such a nice person.
Ronnie O' Sullivan seven times the record breaking Snooker Master

                    • I'd rather watch Gould play to be honest. Very underrated player, and plays good attacking snooker. Don't know much about Mertens, other than he's young, but I wouldn't usually tune in for a Sam Baird match.

but in this match it was like watching him play an amateur with virtually literally no chance , you'd think there's some professional obligation broadcasters have in checking players backgrounds , i'm not sure they actually knew amiri never won a frame before .

not one frame was decided on the colours .

I think Amiri won a match at the Gibraltar Open earlier this year, so he broke that duck with 4 frames. I take your point though. I don't know anything about Mertens though really. He won a frame at the shootout, but played horribly, and his cue tracker shows a lot of early exits at Q School. His amateur record is half decent, but certainly not good enough to bump someone like Gould off the TV table. Gould's been top 16, won the German Masters and a couple of PTC events, won the shootout, and had a couple more ranking event finals. I definitely think he's earned his right to be televised over a kid whose main claim to fame is being young. Gould was young once too!

Nobody’s criticising martin gould or saying he isn’t worth watching , the point behind this is eurosport should know what will look like a decent match and what wouldn’t , gould needed this match to keep his place on tour , he’s hardly likely to lose against someone who’se never won a frame before against a pro , sorry i’m laughing while i’m typing this , and even on the point gould needing to win makes it worth screening baird did too , whats the point of watching a twenty year pro knocking in balls against someone who can’t win , don't we all want snooker to grow , chase ratings not pixies and fairies !!

                              • I would say Eurosport has nothing to do with the selection of the matches, but that would be the Tournament Director and officials - that is not to say the officials do no also think which match would be "better" for TV.
Many times I scratch my head on the TV selection, but often they do get it right...
My thinking of their selection criteria order for a session:
                                1. Big Name (V. heavy weighting)
                                2. High rank (high weighting)
                                3. New face/youngster/"not normal" country (default)
                                4. Others (negative)

obviously, if you have a match with both 1 & 2, makes decision so much easier all round
[purely my opinion and for a laugh ]
