I agree, maybe JV should have retired by his own compunction (as you say) back out honourably

- honestly I don't think JV had anything to do with the change in decision, I think he was resigned to the fact that he was out of the job and maybe looking forward to full-time retirement and now relieved to have the job back.
I hope that this experience has made JV realise that he must now start watching more snooker across the season so he can no longer say those sad words "I have not seen this player"

He may love doing it, plus, the obscene amount of money they get for doing a bit of commentating will be hard to walk away from.
