Peter Lines ends up 1000 points away from the World Grand Prix cutoff and he's done. Oliver is 1000 behind is dad, but is still alive in the Scottish Open. Slessor and Highfield are tied for 32nd, but are done. Hicks is tied with them, but is still alive in both the UK and Scottish. It's going to be an exciting scramble for the last few spots. Selby is in some danger of not making it being only 1500 above the cut line. He's going to need to win a couple of matches at the Scottish to guarantee making it.

I've never understood or agreed with how snooker handles the whole issue of amateur vs professional. In golf you decide to turn pro and from that point on you are ineligible to compete in amateur competitions. How well you do is really irrelevant. You have declared that you are trying to make a living playing golf. In snooker you have players who have been on the tour for years like Michael White. In no way shape or form is he an "amateur" He just happens to be a professional who isn't very good at the moment and isn't able to "put food on the table" from tour winnings. The players that Murphy and Selby lost two are also trying to make a living from playing snooker. An amateur is somebody who has a full time job and plays on the weekend for fun.
What Murphy said was stupid and just plain wrong. Those quasi-professionals have way more pressure on every match because they aren't millionaires like Murphy and most of the top 8-10. They are the ones trying to scratch and claw under immense pressure to "put food on the table"
Where I will kind of agree with Murphy is what is the point of the Q-School if you can fail to make it and still play in every tournament. Those players who just missed should be on the lower tour with other professionals who aren't quite good enough to play on the main tour. Maybe allow 3-4 to qualify or events like Monday qualifiers in golf. It's not fair to the players who did gain tour cards through Q-school that players who didn't make it have identical opportunities to them. And 128 players is just too many. 96 would be a better number. with 33-96 playing the first round and 1-32 joining in the second round. I don't see why "bye" is such a dirty word. Many tennis tournaments do it that way and it's a reward for being a top 32 player. Same as being a top 16 player gets you into the WC without having to qualify.
The bottom line is that finishing in the two year top 64 or making it through Q-School should mean something. The way things are now neither really means as much as it should.Last edited by Stony152; 2 December 2021, 06:27 PM.
