Good question. Malgorzata Kanieska as well. She's been getting more TV time recently.

I've asked this myself as well. It's really striking, isn't it? Not that I mind of course. Good for the sport that there are many people willing to become referees and they do a decent job.

My strong suspicion is that it happened via the PTC Series earlier this decade, which had also regular stops in Bulgaria (both Boshilova and Velichkova are Bulgarian), Poland. It was after this that I began to notice the eastern european referees.

Maybe the beeb will do a piece on it. My guess is one women saw the opening and went for it and others then followed. All power to them.

          • Higgins looks sharp as a tack. A-Game face all the way in that opening frame.

            • Those of you who can rewind and pause the streaming: look at the first red potted by John in the second frame, the cueball makes a curve just before stopping in its final position. It does not look natural to me, maybe Maguire and McGill were right about the table? (Stephen called it a "ski-slope")

Michaela Tabb led the way with a bit of help from World Snooker. She was “fast tracked” through the system. Doesn’t explain the Eastern European influx tho.

I think Michaela was involved back in those days to promote female referees, by being on screen and off screen with events and promotions (local media, etc.) of the WPBSA and referees.
As said above I do think the PTCs in new countries across Europe did more than give players more events to play in and earn a few pennies; and we now see the fruition of those efforts
                  Up the TSF! :snooker:

                    • Seems like O'Sullivan has played maybe 10 shots all match, and 6 of them have been horrible mistakes.

And Higgins scoring strongly enough to take full advantage.

It's just too bad that there aren't any Eastern and Central European players at the Brecel level. Kacper Filipiak had some potential, but it was mentioned here that he's quit the tour. There are a couple of Ukrainian guys kicking around. Nobody really of note from Russia, the Czech Republic or the Balkans. It's too bad. I live in Poland and quite a few of my friends enjoy watching snooker.

                        • So what's the difference between north Wales and south Wales? Looks exactly the same to me when I search for images.

                          • Well played Higgins. He is favourite to win tomorrow too.

                            • I think that was the most vulnerable I've ever seen Ronnie on a table today. Was like watching a Lion pounce on an injured gazelle, not much fun to watch I'd rather see a decent scrap.

I am sure that Southern and Northern Welshers will probably be angered by your comment

search Gower Peninsula and Snowdonia national park
