Interesting one! I don't think it's an illegal shot as it would be difficult to say it was done on purpose. It's quite a clever play and still takes some skill I guess. I've seen Ronnie use the rules to his advantage in the past, he was in a nasty snooker and missed two escapes he then feathered the cue ball on the next attempt and called a foul on himself after that it couldn't be replaced and miss could not be called again!! Not sure if the rule has changed now to stop that but things like this usually become the reason why rule amendments come about.

Alex Higgins was rumoured to deliberately go in off on a few occasions too ,as well as deliberately missing a ball ,which eventually brought in the miss rule as we know it now
