I wonder if Akani could be handed a two year card. As I read it, he has been suffering from late symptoms from corona and hasn´t been able to practise for most of the last year.

      • I really love it when Ding strings together one of those breaks where the cueball mostly just moves as short ways as necessary. Nobody does this quite like Junhui.

        • Anyone going to the crucible?
Would these t-shirts be for sale there?

          • Brecel´s in big trouble now. Needs to win the last two frames of the evening, if he´s going to have a fair chance tomorrow.

            • It pains me watching Ding.

              • Yep, that was a bad loss. Did all the hard work in the penultimate frame only to fail at a simple colour clearance. And then a decent chance to force the decider, but the lack of belief was clear to see in his face.

that sounds a bit grim towards wilson though , i didnt see the whole match but you've got to hand it to wilson , 0 - 3 down against one of the most complete players playing well and he comes back to win , and short of actually winning this event whats his record here now , 6 straight quarter finals and counting , it thats a bad loss then there isn't many good ones i dont think .

                  • Sure, I meant bad loss in the sense that he had plenty of chances to win and couldn't quite hold his nerve. Wilson did well to stay in the match and put the pressure on though.

agreed but it is bloody hard for any player to constantly play good shots , i dont know if much psychology comes into it , probably against most of the other seeds ding would have won today , wilson is hard to beat here , i wouldnt mind to see wilson win one of these just from a consistency standpoint , he probably gets a little underrated because he hasn't won one of these yet.

                      • I think Kyren deserved it, more solid than Ding overall. True, Ding's comeback in frame 17 has been terrific, plenty of classy shots that force you to like his game and make you wish him to win. But he had to pull out those fantastic pots because he was lagging behind a very regular player who inevitably scores at least a 50 break before making a mistake. To some extent, Ding seems to be the uncle of Un nooh and Lisowski: they don't lack ability in safety / defense, they tend to miss huge chances (including easy pots) under pressure, it's their head and self-confidence IMHO.
I really wonder whether Xintong will fall in the same category - if not, he'll probably become my favourite player to watch.

I've noticed it's only seemed to start over the last few years but happens at every tournament and is making a mockery of Snooker. Today a woman of about 70 seemed overwhelmed when she saw herself on camera in the background while Steve Davis is giving his match analysis. Something to share with the grandkids This is snooker not the NBA.

Was amazed at ding conceding the match, no chance Selby or Higgins give up that table.

                            • Trivia:

9 out of the 32 players in round 1 are lefties.
                              neil robertson
                              judd trump
                              thepchaiya un-nooh
                              zhao xintong
                              mark williams
                              barry hawkins
                              liam highfield
                              jack lisowski
                              mark allen

5 are through to the next 16 in round 2 so far. if trump makes it to round 2, it will be 6/16

That must be a record i think.

Was rooting for Thepchaiya to go through against Higgins. He's so gifted, but.. his shot selection, tactical game and random loss of focus did him in, especially on easier shots. Pots a insane brown to open the two reds against the cushion, then misses a short range pot with the rest. or the blue, or the black. Shame.

Brecel will go the same route I am afraid, and i am belgian Hard to watch him throw his cue at wild shots.

                              • Most impressive players to me in round 1 are Zhao Xintong, Kyren Wilson and Mark Williams.
Round 2 might be a bit different, with the top 3 stepping up a bit.
