Fair do's but in terms of the calibre of the opponent, Jimmy Robertson, it may be or is probably the best ever win, good to see.

Especially for Mr Cue Crafty, here you go:
German Masters thoughts (went last night):
1. Fabulous to finally see Jimmy White in the flesh, after watching him on the box since c.1982. He played well, and took it seriously. Whether he's good enough to beat a Robertson or a Wilson? No way. Left-handed fluency player Jack Liesowski might bring the best out of both of the tonight, and White might even beat him if Liesowski does his usual stage-fright act. But doubt it.
2. Wilson looked in steady, but not spectacular, form. Craigie crumbled after a few poor shots on the central TV table.
3. The surprise of the night was the two Chinese players, only one of whom I'd heard of (mea culpa, my bad), which nobody was watching. After the other matches were over by 10pm (from an 8pm start), this epic went on until 12.15am! With at least three frames I saw of epic safety battles. (It was free seating, you could move about. About 1/3 full, which is not too bad, as it's a massive venue, and only the Wednesday night. Didn't hear any other British voices in there, all German fans, many of them shouting "KAM OOON, JAMMY" in German-English). Not quite Thorburn/Griffiths at the Crucible at 3am, but a great treat for the hardcore of 100 or so of us who stayed until the bitter end. In fact, the 'wrong' player won the decider, Zhengi Fan had been hitting in some snipers' bullets long potting, but let the guy I hadn't heard of before (Guodong Xiao) in, in the final safety battle.
4. IMPORTANT - for entire evening, the 'main' scoreboard of all three games wasn't working, just the small ones next to each table. And even two of those weren't working properly all the time. This is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE and UNPROFESSIONAL at a big sporting event everyone has paid a minimum of 40 euros to be at, and the reason I'm particularly angry about it is it happened just last week at the Shoot Out, when the pips stopped working for a bit. This is absolute basics, and a disgrace. It's not a like a football match, where you can remember it's 0-0 or 2-0 if the scoreboard fails. You might be able to remember it's 3 frames to 2, but you can't keep track of the individual scores and breaks.
5. For me, the whole event was a bit sad, remembering last year's semi-final, where Walden was beaten by the Chinese player who went on to beat Yan Bingtao 9-0 in a final whitewash and then both of them suspended for match-fixing. Really bad vibes, feel cheated, and betrayed - even if no suspicions over last night's action - quite the opposite, Xiao and Fan looked like they'd be happy to be there until 5am battling it out.

PS - one for the umpires/nerds. Early on in the White/Peng match last night, Peng did something I've only seen on TV before (was it Mark Allen?), and while preparing a full-length of the table shot with the extended rest and extended cue, dropped the rest. And it hit and slightly dislodged the pink, which was spotted on a baulk colour spot at the time, and so was a foul and he didn't get to play his shot. But the referee didn't replace the pink on the spot. It had only moved an inch or so, but is that how it works?

The Pink would not be replaced because it was not a MISS as a stroke had not been played (i.e. cue striking the cue-ball in the general direction of the ball-on). Balls are only replaced after a Miss is called (and a Miss is only called when the ball-on is not hit by the cue-ball (not going to go into penalty point being required, etc )).
Glad you had a good time at the Tempodrom - will have to go one year
I assume you are not a German-speaker, how did you get on language-wise?
I am sure most (if not all) Germans have a brilliant grasp of EnglishLast edited by DeanH; 2 February 2023, 03:53 PM.Up the TSF! :snooker:

Sorry, meant referees, not umpires. Still quite tired after getting to bed at 2am after the epic China-China safety battle.
I live in Berlin, and speak German, so it wasn't a problem - but 99% of Germans speak English, and they speak it better than 98% of the English. It was just a bit comic hearing them shout "Come on, Jimmy" in English, but with a thick German accent.
Might pop back to the Tempodrome for another afternoon/evening there before it finishes With so few big names making it this year, it's quite an open and exciting tournament.
