Have to say this is probably the most unpredictable final ever for a ranking event. To have two players both outside the top 16 is surprising but both outside the top 32, is really unbelievable.
Okay, Wilson is 32nd but on one year list prior to this event he was sliding down the rankings, 52nd and O'Connor 69th.
Not sure how it's happened, I guess it shows that whilst the standard between the top 16 and the rest is narrower than it's ever been, but also these best of 7s are such a leveller that we see results like this.
Also disproves the talk that there aren't any players coming through in the UK. Gary Wilson is 37 but he's someone that still has a number of years left in him and winning a title could really kick start his career and go on to achieve more success.
As for O'Connor, I was surprised to see he's 27, I thought he was about 23 as he's barely been on tour a few years. I never thought he would turn into the player we've seen this week. He's a hard match type player but that's about all I could say of him. I never saw him as a break builder or capable of the clearance he made in frame 7 I think it was.
Question really is, will either of them cope with the nerves of winning their maiden ranking title? I hope they play well but I fear this could be where the pressure gets to both and they struggle with the occasion and revert to type. I predict O'Connor to win 9-6, I think he has stronger temperament that will see him over the line.
Didn’t see that one coming. Would like Wilson to win. Joe will have other chances. Still young.
Not sure what sort of final to expect but bring it on. Refreshing to see different finalists.

Nice post Cueman, I pretty much agree, whoever handles the occasion better and can settle into their own game will win it. The only difference I can see is O'connor really knows his own game, Wilson, while for me is the more talented, seems all over the place in his approach to snooker. This could be a scrappy classic, or if both fire, a scoring bonanza.
I don't think it would surprise anyone that I want Gary Wilson to win but a Joe O'connor victory would be nice as well, both could really kick start something with the confidence a ranking win would provide.

When you talk about Wilson's approach INE, do you mean his professional and practice regimes are a bit sporadic and unstructured, or is it a more general observation of his up and down form? Cheers mate.
Really looking forward to this final as it’s a breath of fresh air to have two players who aren’t used to going this deep in comps.
Two contrasting styles of players which also makes it more interesting.
I agree with Cueman as I would say that O’connor’s temperament is more suited to a high pressure environment like a final. Saying that Wilson is one of those players that plays on confidence , if he is on it like the latter stages of the semis he has a good chance of winning.
Bookies have Gary favourite. Wonder what Trains will be doing. Always assuming he can be ars*d lol.
Alright mate, out and about at work, the final's already a victory of sorts for me, as Robertson said in his interview last night if both players play well thats good enough for me

In his PMI the other day, he was saying that he often struggles a lot deciding whether to play with a solid practiced technique, or purely on instinct.

The fast and the furious,
The slow and labourious,
All of us, glorious parts of the whole!

Interesting to hear that statement from Wilson. It shows the pro’s also struggle with the same things that club players struggle with .
I bet a few people on here who solo practice recognize that mental issue.
You could see he changed to a more natural way of playing after the first mid session break in his semis. Up to that point he was struggling .
