  • Just over five hours until the final starts, so not much sleep for me tonight...

Both players are looking to win their first major title of the season here, so I expect them to put everything into it. But who is going to win?

There is not much between them on this week's form. They both struggled to get over the line in the semi-finals, and I guess they can both count themselves lucky to have won that final frame, because they certainly gave plenty of chances to their opponents. Selby couldn't string a decent break together since the first frame, which is unfortunately becoming quite common for him at the business end of tournaments. Murphy did have a good patch of scoring in the middle of the match, but he probably needs a longer one in the final. He has been winning the close frames all week, often with a bit of luck, so maybe he will start feeling like he is destined to win this tournament.

Some of their previous meetings were quite disappointing, with one player playing fairly poorly, if not both. I guess the 2012 UK final is the best example. I think Selby probably has a slight psychological advantage, having beaten Murphy in most of their matches over the last two seasons, including that 6-1 thrashing at the Masters in January. He is tough to beat in the scrappy, low-quality stuff, so Murphy will probably be hoping for an open, attacking game. Robertson found himself 5-1 down to Selby in the UK final when it went scrappy, but then turned it around when he got into a scoring rhythm, and I think Murphy would do well to keep that in mind today.

It's a best-of-19 match, so plenty of time for the momentum to switch a couple of times. For some reason I am not very optimistic about this match, but hopefully I am wrong and we get some high-quality snooker or at least a close match, or preferably both. Ultimately I think Murphy's title drought could be his biggest problem here, because he hasn't really won a tournament of this type since 2008, so he might be a little rusty. He is also probably the highest-profile player to have never won a ranking event in China. Selby hasn't really won anything big for over a year either, but some of his titles are still quite fresh in the memory, and he has certainly competed in as many of these types of finals as anyone in recent times. I think he could win this 10-6.

Yes, only this time he didn't pot the black and walk away thinking he'd won the frame - so not quite the hammer blow that was. Wasn't it to one of the lesser known Asian players? Forget who now.

      • Good morning!

So, Murphy makes the better start. He should have won the frame in one visit, but he opened the door for Selby there. He wasn't punished though.

        • The roles reversed in the second frame, but Murphy does punish Selby's mistake with a nice clearance of 80.

2-0, early chance to pull away then...

          • Poor stuff from Selby so far, he had two good chances in the balls in the 3rd frame but went on to lose it on the colours. 3-0.

            • Good effort from Selby to get the snookers, but 4-0 it is...

This always seems to happen this season, one player getting an early lead in the final. But of course there's plenty of time for things to turn around.

              • Murphy should have won so much more in the game how he plays at times, can't see anything other than a Murphy win here.

                • I've not had a chance to watch this yet. I'm taping it but I've been looking at livescores and Murphy looks like he's in great form. 7-2. Can Mark claw his way back from that? Is he good enough right now?

                  • Ah well, not very close this morning, but at least Murphy has raised his game in the last three frames and won them in style. If he keeps this up in the final session he should be strong enough to take it.

Selby needs a bit of his magic from behind now. Has been done before of course, Higgins won the Shanghai Masters from 7-2 down last season.

                    • those last 3 in this session were sublime, on that form he would give O'Sullivan a match, it's nice to see as it gives the game some much needed competition....like the commentator just said " its not up to O'Sullivan to slow down, it's up to the other's to raise their game"

                      • Caught only second half of morning session, first frame was scrappy, but then series of high breaks took place. Shame Murphy broke down on that 146 attempt.
I hope that it would not end soon and Selby can get few frames on the board before the finish, I can`t see Shaun losing it now of course. It was kinda obvious, that he was going to win, as this is his 9th ranking event final, having won every single odd one :-)

just caught up with the record
nice of Eurosport to show Anthony McGill's high break at the mid-session. Usually I fast forward but watched it instead
not long now till the final session
Murphy has settled into the match now - will it continue in the next session?
                          Up the TSF! :snooker:

                            • That was a big frame for Murphy, just to keep a bit of a cushion before the final part of the match. Selby will probably be pleased as well, three of the first four frames, so he has given himself a chance.

Looking forward to the last six frames.

                              • He needed to win that sesh 3-1, 4-0 and he managed it, still gonna be hard to comeback against a class player like Shaun, but Mark has played some of his best stuff from behind, game on!
